New housing complex coming to Germantown area to support low-income families
More affordable housing is coming to the Germantown area in the form of 80 apartment units.
"Safe, quality, and affordable housing is the foundation for everything else in a family's life," said Mayor Craig Greenberg.
This new investment is part of Volunteers of America's Mid-States affordable housing complex. The nonprofit's mission is to change lives through addiction recovery, and homelessness and housing services.
"We know that the issues of homelessness have only increased in our community during COVID-19, and this is an answer to that problem for our community," said Jennifer Hancock, the president and CEO of Volunteers of America Mid-States.
Hancock says that out of the 80 units, 60 will be for low-income families, while the other 20 units are reserved for those in chronic need of services.
"These are individuals who have severe mental health challenges and substance abuse issues. They will be able to access onsite direct services to help them sustain housing," Hancock told 비바카지노 Viva.
The nonprofit already has a presence in the area, with a center on Shelby Street. So, when Dan Caudill, the owner of the Caudill Seed Company, purchased the land adjacent to it in the Merriwether neighborhood, he gifted it to the nonprofit to help them in their mission to combat homelessness.
"Can you imagine waking up this morning to 4 degrees, a negative 10 wind chill, and living in a little piece of plastic in the woods? We can do better than that," said Caudill.
That donation, along with nearly $9 million in tax credits, plus city and state funding, will make this plot of land a home for dozens of families next year.
"The idea of having a prosperous community for all means we have to take care of our most vulnerable, and this is a solution that targets those individuals, uplifts them, and helps them live among us in a self-sufficient way," said Hancock.
The complex is expected to be completed by the spring of 2026.
