Breonna Taylor's mother on new federal charges: 'I've waited 874 days for this'
Updated: 4:23 PM EDT Aug 4, 2022
I'm Attorney Ben Crump along with my great co counsel the 80th president of the National Bar Association, La Anita baker Louisville zone and *** incredible lawyer, *** young man who was the heart and soul of our fight to get justice for Brianna Taylor. He's *** little shy but his presence is right here with us always and that is Attorney Sam Aguiar also present with us is I'll save her for laugh. Also present with us is Tamika Mallory, the queen of this movement and until freedom. Who if you all remember moved to Louisville Kentucky and their quest for us to get to this day to get justice for Briana taylor. So thank you until freedom. Yeah, we also have the leader of the National Urban League here in Louisville Kentucky Northville Urban League. She deserves *** promotion. Sidique Reynolds, we have Briana's aunt who was advocating on the front line even before the legal team got here. And so auntie Briana Bianca Austin deserves *** great round of applause We salute you queen. We love you, we love you. We also have Briana's sister. She's very shy, genia homer. Yo and then certainly the angel of this moment Who for as she reminded the Attorney General Lanny to 874 days. She has been praying and fighting every day. Tameka Palmer, the mother of Briana Taylor. What'd you say to Mika, What did I say bree way. So this day is about her and her family. It's about Briana and all the other Brianna's across America, the black women who have been denied justice throughout the history of this country. When they have been abused, assaulted, murdered, raped and disregarded. Well, because of Brianna Taylor, we can say this is *** day that black women saw equal justice in the United States of America. She's looking down from heaven today. But the first thing I will say is thank God that Kentucky Attorney general Daniel Cameron did not get the last word. Well Brianna Taylor, we are so thankful to Attorney General Merrick Garland, Assistant Attorney General, head of the civil rights division of the Department of Justice, Kristen Clarke and attorneys on their team and the local FBI agents who La nina and Sam just kept acknowledging over and over again. They worked tirelessly for over two years. My son every day saying that we're going to go wherever the facts lead us. And so we are *** great debt of gratitude to the Department of Justice today and we don't ever want to take that for granted what they did. This was very significant. And when you think about the civil rights department headed by christian clark, we would be remiss if we didn't acknowledge the historic campaigns that they're making for justice for marginalized people. People who normally don't have *** voice. I mean this strong black woman leading the justice department's civil rights division has made sure that there were guilty verdicts in the tragic killing of George Floyd, guilty verdicts in the tragic killing of Ahmad Aubrey and today Tamika Palmer *** guilty plea in the killing of Briana Taylor. So we we give props where props are due and it's the first time in my knowledge, president baker that the Justice Department has got any accountability for *** police officer killing *** black woman in the United States of America. So that's why we say this is *** historic day. I mean you you all y'all media Iago search y'all go see if y'all can help us. We can't think of any police officer that has been charged and convicted for killing *** black woman in the United States of America on the federal level. And so that should be acknowledged, that should be acknowledged and we thank you the final things I will say because it is just so profound. I think that's the word, you have to say. What happened today was profound because you have willful deprivation of Briana Taylor's constitutional rights that led to her death. I mean that is *** profound statement. Officer James and officer men li can face up to life in prison and then officer Hankinson charged with violation of Brianna Taylor's constitutional rights can face how long life in prison as well. So these federal charges are very serious charges, we have to stay the course. Officer kelly Goodlett pled guilty today to her involvement in the conspiracy. We had always said Sediq with Reynolds that this was *** conspiracy to cover up the death of Brianna Taylor and today the Justice Department put forth the charging documents. Tameka Mallory to let people know that we weren't crazy when we said they were conspiring to cover up the murder of this innocent black woman. Everybody's saluting justice for Briana. But they can't say we were crazy because we said it was *** conspiracy to cover up the death of this innocent black woman. So we think about all these other cases where black people in America have said the police killed my loved one and they are conspiring to cover it up with its glenn foster where there's so many cases Terence Crutcher. I mean these cases where people believe in their heart that the police killed their families unjust and that they never saw justice. Well hopefully they won't give up hope because it was over two years and Tamika Palmer knows it till the day. I believe the hour and the minute of how long she had to wait to get to justice. As dr King said the moral arc of the universe is long but it bends towards justice. Well today have been towards Brianna Taylor and now you will hear from the president of the National Bar Association. Uh, I mean just one of the best lawyers we have in the United States of America and we're so proud that she is the president of 80,000 black lawyers and judges all across America and the lawyer for Brianna Taylor my co counsel La Anita baker Lewis was on the last time we were here after we met with prosecutors, we were angry, we were upset. We knew we had been denied justice for two years. We've asked for our community to be patient while the Department of Justice did their investigation While we hoped and prayed that we would get justice from the Department of Justice. Today is that first day today the Department of Justice has shown us what we knew. Daniel Cameron lied about in September of 2020. The Department of Justice has indicted officers for lying to get the search warrant to get to Briana's Taylor's home. They have acknowledged that the police officers had no right to be at Brianna's apartment in the first place. And not only did they cover up the lies that they told to get that search warrant and present to *** judge under oath once they were called on their lives in May, they met to conspire again to cover it up and try to tarnish Brianna Taylor's name. We've said this, we've been saying it since 2020, we've been saying they glide, we've been saying Brianna was not involved, we've been saying they should not be at Briana's home, we've been saying that officers should be held accountable for Brianna Taylor's murder and today is the first day towards getting that justice today is *** day for happiness is for two years of almost losing complete hope that we would, that we would see today by having to maintain hope. So that Tamika palmer still had hope. It's been *** rough rocky two years for the attorneys, the community, the activist, everyone that has been involved in this case. That is known the truth about this case. But today it's *** little bit of vindication to show that our fight was righteous. Amen, Amen. Amen Amen. And again, it's *** start. We're gonna continue to fight for justice for Briana taylor because the three officers are fighting life. They were indicted today. We don't know how long that process is gonna take. It's gonna take the federal court system, but they were indicted. The federal government had the guts to do what Daniel Cameron did not amen the malfeasance that the Kentucky attorney general's office showed in this case shows that his political career needs to end now. He has no right holding any political offices representing the constituents in the state of Kentucky because he has shown that he is not for us. He is about self Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you. President Anita baker of the National Bar Association. Uh, it is, it is so profound that four officers have been charged and the links as president baker said that the federal government went through the dot every I and cross every T. It's not something that we have seen historically done on behalf of black people, especially black women. I can't think of *** justice department being disc omitted to civil rights since robert Kennedy and the civil rights movement with martin Luther king and john lewis. So this is *** historic day on every level. And you think about the fact that they have proof, I mean overwhelming proof that these officers not just was negligently executing *** no, not warrant but Tamika palmer. They falsified *** warrant that lead to deadly consequences that lead to deadly consequences of this innocent black woman. And knew they were like gentlemen clark and the FBI agents who were working with the civil rights division, they made *** point to acknowledge that they knew they were falsifying the documents and that is critically important because they knew that those officers would likely rely on their falsified documents that they would likely come to Brianna's, come to Brianna's apartment and kick in the door. They knew that these falsified documents, the search warrant would lead them to think that it was *** dangerous situation that they were going to have guns drawn and they knew that these false certified documents were likely to lead to serious bodily injury and possibly death. And that's exactly what it did when as the Attorney general said, Brianna was shot in the heart and that led to her death. And so that's why we are so grateful to the Department of justice because they follow where the facts went and where Daniel Cameron wouldn't go. So thank you again to the justice department and now *** young lady who is uh, the queen of this movement, she is one of the leaders with Angelo and my son and linda who lead until freedom who moved to Louisville until they were gonna get justice for Briana taylor and thank God y'all can finally go home. So Tamika Mallory, the queen of this movement two plus years ago, it was in 2020 we got *** phone call from Ben Crump saying that there was *** woman killed here in Louisville Kentucky, which I had never been to Louisville in my life prior to that. Uh, and that he needed help that people across the country, we're not talking about her. Um, and we were trying to talking through ways to, I'm sorry, all the words, it's very difficult to gather them today and you know, that's not me. So, uh, it's just ***, it's ***, it's *** good day and *** rough day all at the same time for many different reasons. Um, so I got that phone call and I quickly called the other co founders of until freedom and say, hey, have you heard about Brianna Taylor? It was very light on the internet. *** few people had tagged me and stuff, you know, where they were saying, there's *** young lady in Louisville that's been killed and she was killed. Um, you know wrongfully, but it was not enough happening and not enough people and not enough of the types of influences that we needed to be advocating for her. And so like we always do whenever we are informed of these situations from attorney Crump, who is on the front line of getting phone calls from families in the middle of the night that need help. Uh, we decided to investigate and we couldn't investigate from home. So we came here upon arriving in Louisville immediately, we were told it's not Louisville stop saying that. So they taught us to say Louisville. We learned about people living here in this place where we're standing today. We met what has now become our family, attorney, Anita baker, Attorney Sam Aguiar and of course the Palmer family, we met people that will be with us for the rest of our lives and there's so many other faces that we could name. We also met an incredibly committed group of people who moved out of their homes. We moved from new york and yes, that was significant. But there were people living right here in this square who were committed to justice for Briana Taylor and that is our freeway family that we love, love and appreciate and we could not have done what we came to do without you all because we needed *** movement on the ground here locally for us to be able to collaborate with and bring resources to and we did that we're proud of the work that until freedom committed to over these last two years. But more importantly, we recognize that even in this moment, even in this moment where there is some form of victory because we can all say again as has been said, we're not crazy. There are many people who tried to tell us that we were wasting our time, but we also acknowledge that we still have *** fallen soldier that will never come back and Brianna Taylor, we also know that Kenny walker will never be the same. And so again, while today is *** good day, there's still *** lot of pain that we know this family is going through and we have to acknowledge that we have to acknowledge that. So that's why it's really difficult to come up with the words, but here's what I will say, Daniel Cameron needs to be arrested. He needs to be arrested because he is *** liar and he is an obstructionist. Not only did he lie, not only did he illegally, what is that called? No, he, he handled the investigation illegally. *** botched investigation, but he also damaged the lives of jurors who saw the need to come forward to say that everything that was being presented was *** lie that they had never ever been charged with going back and making *** decision on the officers for killing Brianna Taylor. They had never been given that charge and that's what it's called. You're supposed to give the charge. They had never been given that charge. Those individuals who came forward, we want to say thank you to them for their bravery today because they also are not crazy. This proves that they were *** part of kangaroo court and therefore the person responsible and everybody involved needs to be arrested for what they did to this family and this community. That's our position arrest Daniel Cameron next. Yes, I just want to, you know, say in closing to this community that we will always be until freedom will always be in debt to the fight that happen here in Louisville. *** black woman's life matters Briana taylor matter and we all stood together and this proves that even with the fighting and everything that we went through the fact that we had the same goal and that we continue to fight for Briana taylor. If we do this in cases across this nation, we can in fact win, we can win. Winning is possible through unity. God bless you all. Thank you. Queen Tamika. Uh, next we have another leader who held here from Louisville. But I mean, you all are producing the next national leaders of the civil rights movement right here in Louisville Kentucky. She is the President of the Louisville Urban League under President marc morial, the National Press of the Urban League and she has done something quite extraordinary because we know it's about trying to bring people together from the community and the corporate sector and nobody has done this better than President Sid equal Reynolds of the Louisville Urban League. I want to say to this city today, um this is *** good day. This is *** good day for Louisville. This is *** good day for America. We have waited for so long for justice. We watched people be indicted in George Floyd's case and we celebrated with them. But we also had *** cloud. We watched what happened in the market are very case and we celebrated with them. But we also had *** cloud and today part of that cloud is lifted And it matters these indictments matter. And I want to tell you that telephone call that I received from L. m. p. d. on March 13. I knew that there was something wrong and we said then where are the body cameras? And they told us there were none. I could not prove it then. But I begged our local leaders not to do press with the police because I knew from the moment they called the Urban League that something was wrong in our city. And I cannot tell you what it feels like to be shamed in your city. We have fought so hard, so many, there were people surely who lived in this park, but there were so many of us who were in other rooms and other spaces being told to be quiet being told that the case had been investigated and there was nothing to see here and we were crazy. I want to say thank you to somebody that it may seem odd to thank. But your vette gentry who came in as interim police chief. She did what she could. And I want to say thank you because I want to go back and say something about the men in this city in leadership who did not have the courage to even look closely at this case. I said it on the day that the attorney general returned nothing and I will say it again. There is *** commonwealth attorney in this city who recused himself. There is an attorney general who said there's nothing to see here. We did the best that we could. I want to tell black people and all people that your vote matters because if we did not have this president of this United States of America, If we did not have this attorney general in this country, we would not have these four indictments. There would be no guilty plea from *** police department this morning. There would be no officer on her way to jail today. There would not have been officers picked up today in this city, in this county that we love that we fought for Briana Taylor is gone and we can never bring her back. We can never know the pain that Tamika palmer feels and let me tell you something as the mother of two daughters, I never want to know. I know, never spend any time trying to imagine what it would be like. But in this country, on this day, in this city in Louisville Kentucky, we have been vindicated, there is justice for us. Somebody was wrong and not only were they wrong? Not only did they lie, but they attempted to cover it up. They have been lying to you. And the shock here is not that it happened. The shock is that it is exposed. That is the thing, that is the thing that we have to talk about. It has been exposed. But I say to America, what are we missing? So as we celebrate and congratulate and we must take *** moment to breathe, we must take some time to cry, we must have, we have to have time to recover and to heal because let me say to you all, this has been traumatic, this is *** traumatic being black in *** country that over and over again tells you your life does not matter and listen to me. It should not have taken the FBI to lead this and do this investigation. There were people here who were supposed to be committed to justice on our behalf. They were supposed to do what they were sworn to do and they let us down. This did not have to take this long. This did not have to go on for so long. We have suffered and the FBI has stayed, they have been steadfast and I want to say this, I have promised and Tamika Mallory reminded me, I kept saying and it's all I have had. I have said over and over again. I believe in the FBI, I believe that we will see some justice. I don't think it will be everything, but I believe that we will get justice. And I was reminded of that. And sometimes I have felt like *** woman on *** little bitty island. Real stupid and naive. But today this is vindication. It is the beginning of *** new day, not just in Louisville, but in America, this black woman's life always mattered to her mother. This black woman's life always mattered to her family. This black woman's life always matter To everybody you see here and that black woman's life mattered to me in the Louisville Urban League on March 13 when we got the call and on that day they didn't even give us her name. They just said she was killed in the crossfire. We know the whole story now and it is on us to continue to hold everybody accountable, somebody is dead and it could have been you. It could have been me. The difference is today and it still can be unless we change the way business is done. And if you don't do anything else change the way business is done because this exposure matters. We always knew. But today it is exposed. And I want to say thank you to the people who made that possible, thank you, thank you attorney crump. And now let me say and thank you Attorney Crump, thank you to Anita baker because these kinds of things being courageous matters and there are negative consequences to that. It's not all what you see. It's not all the positive love, there are nega consequences to standing up and fighting for justice. It takes courage, you get your life threatened. There's nobody here that has not have life. But who do you call when your life is threatened and it's the police that you are criticizing. Thank you for justice. Finally, thank you over there. Um, you know people who have been here so emotional because for those of you are old enough, this is *** super cool moment. I mean this is the police corruption leading to the death of innocent people and we can never ever say that that doesn't happen in America. You know one of the things President Reagan said that was really deep and we keep saying they call us crazy. You know when black people say they killed my child, my loved one and they was unjust and they're covering it up. Whether it's glen boston Louisville Tiffany Crutcher and Oklahoma. I mean both of all these people keep saying they're covering it up and they call us crazy. Well from now when they call black people crazy when they kill our loved ones, we say remember Brianna Taylor, they said we were crazy then and we're exposed to cover up. So we got to continue to stand up for these black families, even when it's unpopular, even when they say it's controversial, even when they say you're gonna lose your career, where some things are worth fighting for, some things are worth dying for and our black Children are worth dying. So we don't mind the threats, the insults, the complaints, we're going to continue to stand up for black Children. Because if we don't fight for our Children like Briana Taylor who will fight for them and this brother here who I'm about to bring up *** boy, he fights, He always fights, he's the general of until freedom. My son. I just, I just want to say something real quick because it's on my heart. Don't let nobody tell you not to fight. Don't let nobody tell you that. Don't matter why you out here marching it. Don't it don't matter that you tweeting about it. Don't matter that you're yelling it don't matter that you got *** bullhorn and you're walking down these blocks the man injustice. Every person who stood on the front lines is led to what happened today. Don't let nobody tell tell you that the work that we do on these streets and you sacrifice and you lay on this ground every day that it didn't matter. Don't let anybody deter you from fighting for what you know is right because this is what happens when we fight, we stand united and we fight and we demand justice. We eventually get what we want. Every time you gotta stand up and fight, we don't have the right to do nothing. Y'all, We can't sit back quiet and scared. We can't allow cowards like daniel Cameron to give us justice because they will never give us justice. It's us that's fight, it's us on the front lines. It's us in these streets. It's the people that got to fight for the people. So this victory is for all of us, everybody, everybody who said Brianna tell his name. This is because of you. Freeway, thank you. My sign the general. Um you know what President Ronald said is profound because elections do matter. I mean voting matters, I would never forget Tamika palmer, you know, Vice President Kamala Harris was one of the first people first elected officials to go on tv and say Brianna Taylor's name. And so they do have consequences. I don't think have this administration not been elected, The vice administration been elected that the other administration would ever gave this day to Tamika palmer. So just know that as my son said, Tesla Figaro tells me all the time. It is the people. I mean they are the reasons we got *** conviction in Georgia florida, it's the activists why we got *** conviction and ahmad Aubrey and Dante writes. I mean, it's the people, let's celebrate all right. Even the Fire department happy we got justice. Okay. And now the person who more than anybody is impacted by this day. You know, when you give birth to *** child and that child comes out your body and you look at that child and you watch that child grow and you, you are so close to doing your job as *** parent of making sure that that child is ready to go out into the world and be able to claim her destiny. I mean, she did everything that you could do to give her child the right to life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And March 13 it was snubbed away by these officers for falsifying *** no knock search warrant that they knew was *** lie. But as we learned in church, *** lie cannot live forever. And today the truth is revealed. And so this lady, I mean my God, the 874 days. Can you all imagine La Anita baker with those nights were like thinking this day would never come. But it came. So I think it's appropriate as we bring up Tamika palmer that we say her name. I heard nine, her name, her name, her name. Wait, what? Wait. So as usual, I don't have *** lot to say but I got some stuff to say. Um Today is 874 days. So today on day 874? Stop learning that what I've been saying, let me fix that, what we've been saying and the rest of them back there, what we've been seeing on day one, y'all learning what we've been saying was the truth that they shouldn't have been there and that Briana didn't deserve that. Um, y'all learning that today, that we're not crazy. We're not crazy. But what I'm, I got something to say that I remember um, on one of the, I don't even remember if it was the first year or the second year reunion cause every day it's been March the 13th for me. Um, Tamika reminded me that Briana made *** post, uh, that said, take me to *** place that I can't even imagine Briana has taken us all to *** place that we can't even imagine today's overdue, but it still hurts. Oh, it's some amazing people behind me, some just as amazing people in front of me and I can't call our names to thank. But y'all know who y'all were. Y'all know what y'all did and I will never forget any of it. I must say that everything sent to break me. I ate that ship. That ship being Daniel Cameron, you don't deserve to be where you are and you need to go. And if we don't continue to eat him, one of y'all is on the menu. Next leave, he was dead wrong. It didn't start with him, but he had the first, he had the right to do the right thing and he chose not to. Okay, so again, I've waited 874 days for today. I couldn't have done it without some of y'all. Some of y'all been out here tearing me down. Some of y'all have harassed me, some of y'all have carried me okay. But all of that ship made me and I'm okay with that Brianna Taylor. This this is her day. This is her day. This is her day. This is her day. This is earth day. Yes, mama, we're gonna take some of your questions. Um, we, we we still he's shy but Sam Aguiar was just instrumental to our legal team. I mean, it was him putting for resources and uh, we cannot thank Sam enough. All right, thank you All him and you want to say something really quick before we just I just want to say this. If there are any charges pending against any protesters, they should be dismissed. It is obvious it is obvious that the protesters were right. It is obvious that we needed to force the state pushed the state to do their jobs. It is obvious that they have been ineptly um prosecuted this matter and thank goodness for the federal government. But I do say to any prosecutor in this city, all protesters charges need to be immediately dismissed and expunged. Okay. Hey, y'all because her Bianca was out here fighting before we get to your question. It's appropriate for her to say *** word because I mean she, she reminds me constantly it's about her niece. But it's also about Pamela turner in Houston. It's about jefferson. Tianna, jefferson and texas. It's about Brianna airs in Georgia now, but this sister wherever there's *** black person killed unjustly by the police. She has been taking the fight to them. So y'all give it up for Briana's aunt, the first lawyer Bianca. Yeah, wait, I'm gonna be short because I'm over here shaking and I'm emotional but wait, but I just want to first give all praise and honor to God you all because it's been ***, it's been *** rough 2.5 years like um it's been really rough and today, um it's your day to Mika palmer. It's *** day, it's *** fresh start. You know, I always knew what *** strong black woman you was and I'm glad that you instilled *** lot of that in me and I'm glad that the world got to see what *** strong black, beautiful woman you are. Even even though days that you feel like you're not doing nothing right or you're making bad decisions, you pick people off everything that comes with the territory. Um you are loved and we love you period. Um and to the rest of our family, 616 gun through Detroit 313 California florida. I mean we got family all over y'all and it's been, it's been really rough and today is we got accountability and we're still out here going to get justice for Briana taylor because like we said from day one, everybody that was involved with the death of Brianna Taylor. We are coming for you including this judge mary shaw as well, Daniel Cameron, the mayor, you know what I mean? We need everybody and to the families who's out there, who is still experiencing this tragedy through police brutality. Please keep going keep fighting for your family. Let this be *** day that there is there is there is *** possibility like all this is not gonna be in vain. We ain't out here for nothing. Justice for Briana Taylor. Your name. Yeah your name. Renee we're gonna take *** few of your questions and then let miss palmer rest any questions. What do you know about good looks plea deal That she she entered the plea of obstruction. Um and that she could get up to five years. Uh she is given *** statement to the agents talking about the conspiracy. Yeah it's conspiracy for obstruction. Both as it relates to the obtaining of the uh search warrant. So the falsification, the lives that they knew that it was lies contained in the search warrant when it was presented as well as once that live. Those lives were exposed how to cover it up. Attorney o'clock. Um Asia is conspiracy is conspiracy not obstruction. She conspired with the others to lie about the search one before it was executed and then after they had murdered Brianna Taylor, it was pivotal. It was crucial and so you know it's it's really *** circle moment when you have an officer who finally starts telling on everybody and how they conspired together to cover up the murder of this innocent black woman. The well the prosecutors are from the Department of Justice in Washington, D. C. They will be handling it as you heard Attorney General um garland statement today. This is *** priority for their officer. So next they will be getting the schedule from the federal courts but to know we are here and we're in support MS Palmer but it is the department of Justice that is prosecuting this case directly from the Office of Civil Rights led by Assistant Attorney General Clark. Yeah. And we have to thank General Clark and the local FBI agents here in Louisville who worked constantly with Sam Lanie to Miss Palmer, all of our legal team. I mean Louisville really made this moment possible with the direction and the support of christian clark and the Attorney General. You guys talked about all the different angles of the fight from your side to get to today. I just want to know when you hear the information and you learn about the initial falsifying of the warrant. What is that moment? Like as you guys are going through this process when you hear those words, we've been saying that since we found out. I mean we have to get give our head software and credit where credit is due. I think it was Jason Riley who first broke the story about the lie contained in the search warrant. That he got the information from the U. S. Postal service. That trajectory from that point on we knew it was allowed you're able to investigate from that point on and so we've just been waiting for the charging authorities to catch up with what we already knew. So again it's vindication we've been saying it and we're just happy that that the world is is knowing that what we've been saying is accurate. It is it is critical to acknowledge on the record that Brianna taylor was killed unjustly unnecessarily and unconstitutionally. I think that was the biggest part today. It was acknowledged that they violated her constitutional rights as an american citizen who have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness they unconstitutionally deprived to Mika palmer's daughter of her right to live when they falsified that no not one and as general clark said it's not just about the reckless execution of *** no knock warrant. No this was the falsifying of *** search warrant and that cannot stand in America and they had no business being at Brianna's apartment in the first place and they knew that falsifying that warrant would send armed officers to Brianna's apartment and so that led to *** chain reaction that and the National Bar Association stands on these issues and Sam and Anita and I, we kept saying in our civil case, how many know not want to serve disproportionately on black people in Louisville Kentucky. I mean that this was for civil that an innocent person like Brianna Taylor would be killed if you kept falsifying search warrants where they can kick it out front door at one o'clock in the morning. Like we said, they don't do that to our white brothers and sisters. First of all, congratulations on your new position. Can you speak to uh folks like man, remember Daniel Cameron made comments about him coming into town. But maybe could you talk about the National Bar Association being from, we saw him with *** lot of our berries family and related to fred taylor and her good marshals. Yeah, I mean I think it's important to know the work of the National Bar Association is we're always pushing for change the legislative change. What happened to Brianna is the result of systemic problems and until we fix those issues, we're going to continue to see more Brianna. So we're about fixing the systemic issues. Attorney Crump is on the front lines of many admitting fights because he has to be on those fights. We know that Sam and I we were trying to get people to pay attention to Brianna's case for months before we before Attorney Crump joined the team, no one paid attention. But when he paid, when he came and when he got involved, the world began to pay attention until freedom got involved. The justice squared the brie way got him. It's so daniel Cameron can say what he wants. Daniel Cameron got the heat that he deserved and he shone and today shows that he was just upset that eventually his malfeasance was gonna come to light. What's done in the dark comes to light and that's what happened today. I think we've touched on that. Yes, we know I want to talk about it. We need attorney, we need prosecutors who are not in incestuous relationship with the police and that is not just in Louisville. That's across the country. The relationship between prosecutor and police often is incestuous and you don't get fair investigations. That's why you don't see more indictments. That's why we don't see these deeper looks. That is one of the first things that we have to have happened, not just in Louisville, but across this country. Some cities have that they have particular offices that are prosecuting where you see corruption and police departments or government officials. We really do need that. That is one of the first things that I think we have to have. I also think that there has to be *** look into. When jurors come forward and say what you, what you saw on the news is different than what I heard some, somebody has to look into that. I don't know what agency that is. I don't know if it's the department of justice, but somebody has to look because when people come forward as volunteer jurors and spend their days and nights poring over *** case poring over facts to get to the right thing and they have the courage to come forward. Someone has to look at that not just in Louisville, but again across the country, these are systems that are we working in the way they were designed to work and we all have to have the courage to redesign these systems so that they change so that they do ensure justice for all. And then we have *** treat before we take the last question uh you know La Anita and I *** lot of times out front, but there's *** brother from another mother working in the background who really, I mean late night, early morning Professor Angelo, this brother uh is being so crucial to us getting justice for Brianna Taylor and I can never acknowledge him enough. Yeah. Sam Aguiar gonna make *** few remarks. Well, I just wanna make sure I heard this correctly. Did you ask if there's any recommended policy or procedure changes at Ln P. D. That you'd recommend how much time you got. So one of the things I'd say is that what this case? I think revealed more than you know the public might have known is how big of *** problem plainclothes policing is. So I think that, you know, if you look at some of these other areas where you're putting these cops, these unmarked cars and you give them all these toys and all this power and you're not putting *** uniform on them, that that needs to change. I think you're giving them *** little bit too much of *** sense of, you know, basically can get away with anything. But the second thing, and I'm just gonna confront right where it is that needs to be looked at is what the hell is the real motive behind these search warrants and and how much money is being taken, and what's the use of these confidential informants? And are we basically, you know, empowering *** system where these plainclothes detectives are going out and getting to pay these guys to tell them where money is or where they think money is, and they're basically, it's about being robbed squads. So, so, you know, I think that what you see in Baltimore, what you see in new york and philadelphia and Detroit historically, I think it's every bit as bad or worse here throughout the years leading up to this. And I think that one thing we'll never learn about, but that is pretty clear is that, you know, you have some factions of people that night that were part of *** rob squad and that, you know, that was an everyday thing and that you're gonna fabricate probable, cause you're going to put whatever you need to do in *** document when you think you might be able to break in there bringing *** dog, take away *** bunch of money. Divvy it up and then go to the same damn thing tomorrow. So um so so that's kind of the rotten underbelly that I don't think we'll ever get to. But gosh, justice is *** good thing. And today has been two years you know, waiting patiently and God bless Tameka palmer. God bless all of you. God bless this whole team. I mean it's this this city really you know the good people that's sitting across the country just just stood up and didn't take no for an answer. And and the doj got it right. So um so let this be *** message to all these other families and all these other bad cops out there that you know when we can unify and use our voices and go out and dig and put pressure that that there's tangible results and that these cops gonna go behind bars. So Alright. Freeway last question but they met in the garage to get the story straight just in case. I mean what's your reaction to that? Uh uh My my thought is this and I let Tamika Mallory have the last word uh the fact that they met in the garage. You know after this to try to conspire to say how do we get away with murder is really critical. I mean they conspired and lied to get the judge to sign the search warrant. And then when they got caught on the line, when things went bad, then they were seated lee meeting in garages talking about all right, we got to make sure the stories line up. And so the guilty plea by officer kelly Goodlett exposes the lie that black people are not crazy. When we say after the police kill us, they conspired to try to cover it up. It has always been about transparency leading the truth leading to justice. That's really what it is, transparency plus accountability leads us to trust the police. But when you conspire and try to cover up our death that builds the mistrust without against cops were against cops who brutalize our Children who shoot our Children in the back and in the heart. So that's what this is about and never can they say to black people again that we are crazy when we say the police conspired to kill us because we say remember Brianna Taylor Yeah, and I think it's just the, it goes to the links that officers will go through to try to cover their tracks and unless you have someone who's willing to dig and investigate, we know so many times they've gotten away with it. So um the meeting in the garage, we're thankful that that that was today was our first time hearing about how they met and planned to cover it up. But it was exposed And it was because of the work and the hard question asking of the FBI agents here in Louisville. The Department of Justice, prosecutors who are stationed in Washington, D. C. Uh, that was that we were able to uncover just the, the extent that they would go to to cover up their lives how much confidence you guys, well, whether or not anyone will bring charges against Daniel Cameron is one thing. But the community, the citizens of Kentucky can make sure that he no longer holds any political office in the state of Kentucky. So as you've heard, as my son said, the people, people who are boots on the ground can make sure that Daniel Daniel Cameron is held accountable by making sure that he does not get elected to any other office in Kentucky. Professor Angelo pinto when you're teaching the young minds at Yale University, you document how important it is for the activists and the lawyers in the community to all work together. And so that's why it's appropriate that get the last word. I just uh, you know, I neglected to mention earlier that the administration, the biden administration right now and I want to join those who are praising today, the work that came out of the Department of Justice. However, there is something very serious happening in this country right now where uh, the biden administration wants to put more cops on On the streets of America. And there are bills in Congress right now that they are trying to pass where $13 billion 100,000 new officers will be hired to be on our streets. And I think what has happened today should. And I also want to make sure that we acknowledge the work at the congressional Black caucus and the congressional Progressive Progressive Caucus were doing last week to block those bills so that they would not pass in the Congress. Some of them have passed unanimously in the Senate, but they still have to go through the Congress in order to become law. And they have been blocked by the congressional Black caucus and the Congressional Progressive Caucus. And I think what we have learned to today is more of an example of why the administration would be going against the work and undoing the work that it did today by putting more police officers on the ground without true accountability measures. We need to ensure that we end qualified immunity and we need to make sure that officers who are breaking the law are tried by local governments because the Department of Justice cannot do this for every single case. They will not do it for every single case and we cannot look to them to be the police of local police departments. We need local police departments to have guardrails that will protect our rights. So we wanna make sure we put that on the record today, say her name, her name.

More than two years after Breonna Taylor's death, four people have been federally charged and it feels like justice for her family and supporters. "I've waited 874 days for this," Taylor's mother, Tamika Palmer, said. "You all are learning what we've been saying is the truth, that they shouldn't have been there and that Breonna didn't deserve that."They all met at Jefferson Square Park Thursday, where protests went on for months after Taylor's death in March 2020, to react to the news."This is a day when Black women saw equal justice in America," lawyer Benjamin Crump said. Many were heard chanting the same chant that has become familiar in Louisville streets, "Say her name, Breonna Taylor!"Many of those who spoke echoed criticism of Attorney General Daniel Cameron's handling of the case."The federal government had the guts to do what (Cameron) did not," attorney Lonita Baker said. Cameron has not yet reacted to Thursday's announcement.Crump said, "Thank god Attorney General Daniel Cameron did not get the last word in the death of Breonna Taylor." Here's a statement released by the attorneys: "These nearly two and a half years have been extremely difficult for Tamika, Juniyah, and their family as they맥스카지노ve endlessly fought for justice on behalf of Breonna. Likewise, it has been a tough fight for the attorneys, advocates and community members who have rallied to support Breonna맥스카지노s family in their quest for justice. "Today was a huge step toward justice. We are grateful for the diligence and dedication of the FBI and the DOJ as they investigated what led to Breonna맥스카지노s murder and what transpired afterwards. The justice that Breonna received today would not have been possible without the efforts of Attorney General Merrick Garland or Assistant AG for Civil Rights Kristen Clarke. We hope this announcement of a guilty plea sends a message to all other involved officers that it is time to stop covering up and time to accept responsibility for their roles in causing the death of an innocent, beautiful young Black woman. "On behalf of Breonna맥스카지노s family, thank you to all who have continued to say her name, continued to pray, continued to fight, and continued to shut down all of the hate, negativity, and lies. There have been so many dark days, so many times when hope was lost. We cannot emphasize enough how pivotal your voices and support have been to keep us going."There are still so many families who are fighting and praying for justice and accountability in situations where their loved ones were wrongfully killed by the police. We need to stand with them, fight with them, pray with them, and do whatever is possible for them. "Say her name. Breonna Taylor."
