Woman loses her leg after shark attack in the Bahamas
An Iowa woman is recovering after she was attacked by a shark in the Bahamas.
Heidi Ernst was attacked while scuba diving on June 7.
According to a page, Ernst was getting back on a boat when the shark attack happened.
Ernst is an experienced scuba driver and just completed her 500th dive in May this year. She told sister station KCCI that she has never feared sharks before.
"They typically just come and swim around us. No threatening behaviors, no aggressive behaviors," Ernst said.
The boat's crew administered first aid before first responders took her to a hospital in Freeport.
Ernst was then taken to a hospital in Miami, Florida, where her leg was amputated due to the extent of the wound and the infection. She is now awaiting her fourth surgery. She said she is already in physical therapy and hopes to be back in Iowa by the end of the week.
Ernst said she is thankful for all the support she's received.
"I've never felt so, so much gratitude for what people do for others. I'm sorry. It's emotional," Ernst said.
