Congressman Morgan McGarvey hosts town hall focused on the future of Social Security
Rep. Morgan McGarvey held a town hall in Old Louisville on Saturday to highlight his ongoing efforts in Congress to protect Social Security benefits.
The event brought together local residents, advocacy groups, and notable speakers.
Some of those speakers included Social Security Administration commissioner and former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley and Kentucky State Sen. Keturah Herron.
McGarvey, who represents Kentucky's 3rd Congressional District, warned of the devastating impact any cuts to Social Security could have on Louisville families.
He shared a moment from a recent town hall at Beecher Terrace, where a woman approached him with a plea.
"She said 'Do not let them take Social Security. Without it, I can't live,'" McGarvey said. "Of those million Kentuckians who receive Social Security, 53 percent would live below the poverty line without it. We are talking about human lives, human health and human dignity when we are talking about Social Security."
According to McGarvey's office, more than 149,000 people in Kentucky's 3rd District currently receive Social Security benefits. That includes 107,683 seniors, 21,109 disabled workers, and 9,583 children.
