Countdown to Derby: Churchill Downs putting final touches on temporary paddock
The countdown to Kentucky Derby 149 has been on since Kentucky Derby 148 ended.
However, when race fans enter the gates to Churchill Downs for this year's Derby, they're going to see a different view.
Churchill Downs is in the middle of a $200 million renovation to its paddock and seating, and it's not set to be finished until 2024.
"There's a lot going on around here," said Darren Rogers, a spokesperson for Churchill Downs.
What's usually a viewing and saddling area for racehorses before they gallop to the track is currently filled with construction workers and heavy machinery. Rogers assures fans, however, that the track will be ready for its crowd of over 300,000 in just 19 days.
"Look, we're under construction. But we're going to make this the greatest derby experience for those that come out here, and make it as unnoticeable as is as possible," Rogers said.
The paddock currently has 20 temporary stalls and a walking track of artificial turf for the horses just underneath the picturesque Twin Spires.
"What's great about this new paddock is that it is sunk in seven feet. So you'll be able to have tiered viewing, looking down upon the horses," Rogers said.
The view around the paddock has a greater viewing area for fans to check out their pick before placing a bet. They've also paved the plaza with asphalt for fans to walk around.
The second-floor balconies and seating that once overlooked the paddock are a thing of the past at this year's run for the roses. However, Rogers said there will still be access to higher levels from the paddock.
"We also have an east-west corridor that you'll notice that is going up behind the historic grandstand of 1895. Guests will be able to go up from the paddock area easily to the second floor," Rogers said.
One part of the renovation already complete is the First Turn seating. It will offer an additional 7,000 seats, whereas the temporary seating only held 3,200.
According to Rogers, it will not only offer fans a "beautiful backdrop," but also a unique dining experience.
"What's different about the first turn dining experience if you buy, say, for example, a table in the Stakes Room or Millionaire's Row, you're committed to buying a table of eight or 10. You can have communal dining over in that first turn," Rogers said, adding that it will allow smaller parties to buy tickets together.
We'll get a first look at the finished First Turn seating next week, which still has available seats.
Monday is the last day to get a general admission ticket to the infield or paddock, before prices increase. Tickets are available for
