Country House shows off as the 2019 Kentucky Derby winner
The day following Country House's controversial Kentucky Derby victory, what's next for the colt?
Trainer Bill Mott said Sunday morning that the obvious choice is the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore.
But the 2019 Derby winner's running in that race isn't set in stone just yet.
"Having the Derby winner, you're pretty much forced to go into the Preakness," Mott said. "Frankly, when the horses crossed the wire, I was elated. I thought our horses ran really well. And being second, well, there's no pressure to go to the Preakness. And both of our horses are very well suited for the Belmont. But now we've got to rethink that."
Kentucky Derby 145 ended with the original winner, Maximum Security, being disqualified for interference, so Mott won his first Kentucky Derby.
The Hall of Fame trainer said it's a weird feeling.
"I feel terrible that I have to apologize about winning," Mott said. "Saying something that is foolish, that is sorry that I won, because I don't want to give them the wrong impression that I'm unhappy about winning. It's just such an usual way to have to go to the winner's circle."
Mott had two horses in the race: Country House and Tacitus.
Leading up to the first Saturday in May, Tacitus was the likely choice to give Mott his first Derby victory.
To start the race, Country House had 65-1 odds and had never won a race before.
Mott said that he believed Country House made the effort to win, but even he was caught off guard.
"I was very surprised that he broke and was as close to the pace as he was. I would've thought the other way around," he said.
Both of Mott's horses finished in the top three in the 2019 Run for the Roses, with Tacitus finishing third.
He said that, if he decides to run them, both Country House and Tacitus will train for the Preakness at Churchill Downs.
