Downtown Louisville statue surrounded by protective barrier after vandalism attempt
A statue in downtown Louisville is getting increased protection after an apparent attempt to vandalize it.
Around 3:30 p.m. Louisville Metro Police said they were called to the Belvedere in the 500 block of West Main Street about damage to the York statue.
When they got there, officers noticed the arm of the statue had been damaged as a result of someone trying to saw it off.
Wooden boarding has been placed around the statue for now to protect it. There was no word from police on how long the protection would be up.
The York statue is of a slave who accompanied Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on their famous expedition.
