Harvest Homecoming enhancing safety for 2025 after deadly shooting last year
Changes are coming to Harvest Homecoming this year after an 18-year-old was shot and killed at last year's festival.
Bryce Gerlach was one of three people shot at the 2024 Harvest Homecoming. Gerlach died, while the other two bystanders were taken to the hospital to be treated.
Joshua Smith received an eight-year prison sentence for his role in the shooting, while Darius Tuff was sentenced to 37 years.
Three other men, Damarius Gardiner Person, Isaiah Page, and Shermichael Smith, are scheduled for trial later this year.
Ahead of the festival this year, which runs from Oct. 9-12, officials are announcing changes in an effort to increase safety.
New safety features will include:
- Increased police presence led by the New Albany Police Department and Floyd County Sheriff's Office.
- Updated festival hours for better flow and security oversight
- Additional barricades and fencing to enhance crowd control and perimeter management
- Clearly marked ride entry checkpoints to help manage access
In addition to that, anyone under 18 will have to be accompanied by someone who is 21 or older to enter the ride area.
"We remain committed to continuously evaluating and enhancing our safety efforts to support the well-being of all participants," officials said in a statement. "We sincerely appreciate the continued support of our vendors, patrons, and the broader community."
