Indiana passes controversial property tax relief bill
Homeowners in Indiana could receive some relief on their property tax bills.
Indiana's Senate narrowly passed a controversial bill overnight.
provides a maximum $300 tax credit for some homeowners.
Republicans insist it will save Hoosiers an estimated $1.3 billion over the next three years.
Teachers protested before the vote, saying it will strip money away from public schools.
"My school corporation is public, so if their funding gets affected we'll have to find resources elsewhere or do the same with fewer resources, and that's not going to help any student that I know," said Nathan Ferguson, teacher in Washington Township.
The bill also allows some local governments to impose a local income tax, which critics say could cause increases for everyone.
Gov. Mike Braun signed the measure into law Tuesday afternoon.
Braun said the bill will make "the tax system fairer, more transparent, and easier to understand."
