The Efficient and Effective School Governance Task Force (JCPS task force) met for the second time on Monday. JCPS superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio was front and center again, this time presenting on topics ranging from contracts, district employment, truancy, finances, and more. He says currently, the district has a little more than 18,000 employees. New teachers start around $48,000.The average teacher salary, which Pollio defined as teachers with around 13 years of experience, is more than $76,000. He says they are focused on teacher retention."Our focus here is to make sure our teachers in our highest needs schools, we are attracting and retaining them, we are bringing some seniority into these schools and they are being paid more than many of their peers as well," he said on a stipend they offer teachers in higher need schools. In addition, Dr. Terra Greenwell, JCPS chief academic officer, and Shalonda Foster, JCPS assistant superintendent of secondary academics, presented on district literacy and numeracy efforts. Rep. James Tipton of Taylorsville asked if the district is seeing an improvement in test scores after the new curriculum. "So we know with anything new initiative-wise, it's three to five years before you see the full impact," Greenwell said. "However, when we are looking at map reading fluency, from this past year, we see increases in foundational literacy across all categories for all of our students so we have indicators of success along the way that we know we are on the right track."The next meeting will be held Monday, Aug. 19, at 1 p.m.
