Senate passes resolution to create JCPS task force, which will consider splitting up district
A task force has been created to investigate the size and operations of Jefferson County Public Schools.
It's the result of the Kentucky Senate passing House Concurrent Resolution 81. It'll study the size of JCPS and how the district operates.
The task force will then determine if any changes are necessary, which could include splitting up the district.
The task force will be made up of 13 members, including three from the House, three from the Senate, two JCPS parents, a business expert, Mayor Craig Greenberg, State Auditor Allison Ball, a JCPS teacher, and a JCPS principal appointed by Superintendent Marty Pollio.
Louisville Republican Ken Fleming sponsored the resolution.
"Some say JCPS is too big, some say it's okay. You know, and part of the goal is to get as much information, to make a couple, to make some recommendation. But we're going to look at all options," said Fleming.
The idea has faced strong opposition from various stakeholders, including JCPS itself and former state lawmaker Attica Scott.
Concerns have been raised about the potential fragmentation of resources, educational consistency, and increase of inequalities splitting up JCPS could cause.
In response to the formation of a task force looking into splitting up the district, JCPS officials said in a statement to 비바카지노 Viva News:
"We will be happy to furnish the task force with any information it desires. We hope the task force chair will accept our invitation to have the meetings in any JCPS school(s) they wish to visit. This will facilitate greater local community and stakeholder participation and input."
The task force is required to submit any recommendations by Dec. 1.
