The River Road project in downtown Louisville is set to begin this week.
The goal is to create a more park-like atmosphere underneath Interstate 64 and the Belvedere that serve as a critical connection between the currently developed Waterfront Park and its westward expansion.
Mayor Craig Greenberg shared the $2.2 million project which aims to enhance access and safety around key landmarks such as Waterfront Park, the Belvedere, and the PlayPort.

Jennifer Caummisar-Kern, director of Public Works, emphasized pavement improvements resulting from the project.
맥스카지노By transforming this portion of River Road, we맥스카지노re not just enhancing pavement. We맥스카지노re building pathways between neighborhoods, creating avenues for all modes of travel and creating a safer, more connected community for generations to come,맥스카지노 said Jennifer Caummisar-Kern, director of Public Works. 맥스카지노Whether walking, biking, driving or riding 맥스카지노 this is not just about improving transportation; we맥스카지노re creating a more beautiful and inviting space for everyone to enjoy.맥스카지노
The mayor's office said project consultants see a minimal impact on existing travel times along this section of River Road. Traffic will still be allowed during construction.
"We are losing one lane westbound, and that's going to be the majority of the interruption to traffic flow. There will occasionally be some eastbound traffic cones and transportation set up so that we can do work, do striping there, or do the install of some pedestrian crossing poles," said Rosa Holcomb, the project manager with public works.
Changes in the project will also include enhanced and decorative lighting, directional signage, landscaping upgrades and art.
Holcomb said this is just one phase of what will be a bigger plan for the city.
"It will connect the pieces of the loop and connect the pieces of River road with additional bicycle and pedestrian connectivity. So this is going to flow into a river road West expansion that is expected to start next year. It's a design right now," Holcomb said.
Parks to the west of River Road and the Belvedere to the east will all be connected together for pedestrians, offering a safer way to get around the city.
"It will be a way for people to get around. If you're up at the guardhouse, you can get down to the wharf and connect River road to fourth Street to the Belvedere. That really is how we make our way around downtown. It is much more attractive," said Rebecca Fleischaker, the executive director of Downtown Louisville Partnership.
The construction on River Road is expected be completed in September. The River Road West expansion project is expected to start in 2026.
