A 64-year-old man is recovering after falling 20 feet while hiking in Adams Canyon in Layton, Utah, on Memorial Day.
An off-duty nurse, Ashley Anderson, was hiking nearby with her children and dogs when she heard cries from friends that someone needed medical assistance.
"I looked over and I didn't even know what I was looking at at first. It took me a second to register that it was a body," Brittany Tait.
She quickly organized a group of bystanders to help the injured man, who, near the lower falls, had fallen 20 feet.
"I looked over and I didn't even know what I was looking at at first. It took me a second to register that it was a body," she said.
Anderson and others rushed to his side. She said that, using a shirt from a fellow hiker, she applied a makeshift bandage to his head. They moved him to a dry area while waiting for search and rescue crews to conduct a helicopter rescue.
The man suffered a shattered patella and a broken femur but was fortunate to avoid serious head or spinal injuries, Anderson explained to KSL.
Anderson reflected on the experience, saying, "There had to have been angels or somebody helping him."
She now shares a bond with the strangers who came together to help save a life.
The man is expected to make a full recovery, according to doctors.
