'We are always here': Officers stay with elderly man who called police because he was lonely
Two Iowa police officers went above and beyond their duties to serve their community. Around 2:50 a.m. Friday, the Milford Police Department received a 911 call from an elderly man at a home. When officers Keaton Verner and Garth Wolff arrived, they asked the man what the emergency was. "He explained to us that he was lonely and wanted someone to talk to," Milford police said in a Facebook post, which has since been removed. The police department posted a new Facebook post and clarified, "He is very much loved and has family that are involved with his everyday life."But after they arrived early Friday, Verner and Wolff pulled up chairs next to the man and said they would keep him company. When Wolff's shift was over, he left, but Verner said he was going to stay for a while just to talk to the man so he wouldn't be lonely. "Most people wouldn't do this, and I am sure it meant the world to him. This career isn't about making arrests, giving people tickets. It's about helping others out in their time of need. If you ever feel like you need someone to talk to, please don't hesitate to call. We are always here," the Milford Police Department's Facebook post said. The police department shared its non emergency number for anyone else in their Iowa community that might be having a hard time."Please don't be afraid to call us and we will respond at anytime during the day or night," the updated post said Sunday night. "We are here for you all 24/7 7 days a week."
