Pandemic spawns renewed interest in classic video games
Classic video games appear to be making a comeback due to the COVID-19 pandemic and people continuing to be stuck indoors.
"Video games are a great way to fill the time, and especially with the retro stuff, it's kind of nostalgic," said Travis Boune, owner of 1UP Retro Gaming in Sacramento.
Boune opened his store on Black Friday last year, in the middle of the economic downturn. He says business has continued to do well.
"I think we are uniquely suited for the need right now," said Boune. "People are looking back at times that were happier for them."
Taking a step inside the store is like going back in time. Shoppers can find hundreds of games dating back to the '80s 맥스카지노 and classic console systems from Atari to Nintendo 64.
Shoppers shared that gaming helped provide a welcome escape from the difficulties of the year.
"Some people are at home, or maybe they have to take people in," said Adam Parker from Carmichael, who just lost his job. "It's nice to have that escape, that personal escape you can have to make your day a little bit better. Take some of that stress off."
"You can bring back that stuff you used to do that brought you joy," said Katie Nishimori, who recently dug up her old Wii gaming system.
Shopper David Navarette said going through the store's classic games brought back many childhood memories.
"Feeling the cases brings back a lot of fond memories," he said. "I think video games is a good way to not only connect other people to the internet, but a good way to escape the presence of reality amongst us."
Interest in video games has grown since the COVID-19 pandemic. The World Economic Forum found in September 2020, $29.4 billion of video games were sold in the U.S., a 23% increase from the same period last year. Research firm NPD Group found gaming sales in the U.S. in August increased 37% year-over-year to $3.3 billion.
Video game companies also reported soaring profits. Nintendo reported $1.4 billion in profits in the second quarter 맥스카지노 five times more than it made in the same period in 2019.
