Scottie Scheffler's attorney says he was following directions, refutes police report
Following the arrest of Scottie Scheffler on Friday morning, Louisville-based attorney Steve Romines will be representing him.
Romines says Scheffler was heading to Valhalla Golf Club early Friday morning to practice before teeing off for the second round of the PGA Championship later that day.
Traffic had been re-directed that morning as well, following a shuttle bus hitting and killing 69-year-old John Mills.
While trying to get to the course, Romines says Scheffler had been told to continue through traffic.
"He was directed by a traffic control officer to go around a stopped bus and to proceed into the grounds at Valhalla," said Romines. "As he was doing that, another officer took issue with it and subsequently placed him under arrest."
According to the arrest citation, Detective Bryan Gillis was directing traffic.
He was in full LMPD uniform and a high-visibility yellow reflective rain jacket. Gillis had stopped Scheffler and attempted to give instructions.
In the citation it says, "subject refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging Detective Gillis to the ground."
Romines denies this account.
"There was never at any time, did the officer stop him, he disregard, accelerate, any of those things," said Romines. "He followed another traffic control officer's directions as to how to proceed and that's what he did."
Romines also says Scheffler was driving a marked vehicle with his player credentials visible.
LMPD also released a statement, saying in part, "LMPD personnel were also directing traffic around the scene. While an officer was directing traffic, an encounter with a motorist attempting to make entry into a restricted area ultimately led to the driver being arrested. We are in the process of conducting a thorough investigation. We are appreciative that all parties involved are fully cooperating.맥스카지노
