Silver Creek School Corporation proposes tax increase, holds town hall
Property taxes may rise by 44 percent in a southern Indiana community as a local school district proposes the hike to fund improvements.
Silver Creek School Corporation is proposing a 44% increase for homeowners and 32% for businesses.
They say this funding will be used to build a new elementary school, reconfigure grade levels, and more.
Neighbors in Sellersburg say it will take a toll on the community.
"I've personally spoken to community members who have cried, telling me they can't afford another tax increase," said neighbor Von Andres. "Most of them are elderly retirees, that they will be forced to sell their home or they're going to have to do without prescriptions, or they're not going to be able to afford to feed their dogs or cats. This is a major impact on our town, so I'm pretty upset about it."
Indiana is a school choice state.
Silver Creek School Corporation does take out-of-district students, which provides funding.
But they continue to grow every year, and as a result, they say they need more physical space.
"Kids are learning in modular trailers," said school board member Chris Rountree.
"We're trying to not only address our needs today, but also address our needs well into the future," said superintendent Chad Briggs.
District leaders say they spent nine months looking into other options,
"We feel that this is the most economical option," Rountree said.
Silver Creek School Corporation has a tax calculator on their website.
According to their calculator, a home valued around $300,000 would cost nearly an additional $630 a year, or around $52 a month.
The district believes the cost may be less.
"For many of them, it's more in the range of 20%," said assistant superintendent Todd Balmer. "That's because of the deductions they're receiving and tax caps."
Bill Conlin, who is on social security, says for him, every dollar counts.
"It's a big difference for somebody on a fixed income," Conlin said.
"And we know this one is a big ask," Balmer said. "But at the same time, we feel like there's a reason that people want to come to Silver Creek. There's a reason that people love some of the kids here, and we're just simply wanting to continue on to provide the facilities needed that make that happen."
Leaders held a town hall meeting on Thursday to address questions.
But ultimately, the decision is in the hands of voters.
There is a special election on May 6 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
