After getting shut out in the district quarterfinals last year, Spencer County baseball made it its mission to come back stronger in 2025.
"That experience last year, I think they were hungry," said head coach Stuart Dill. "They came back and we talked about it a little bit, all year and offseason workouts. It motivates them a little bit."
"We sat down at the end of last year. We were thinking like we can win the region this year. We got all the talent. We didn't lose anybody we knew coming into the season that we'd be pretty strong," said senior Jarrett Stewart.
With nine returning starters, the Bears made sure to right their wrongs, coming back from a six-run deficit to defeat Collins 7-6 in nine innings and win their first district title in 26 years.
"1999 was the only other one we've had in the school," said Dill. "So, I was actually six years old, and my dad and coach Slaughter, one of my other assistants, were on the staff as well then. It was a pretty cool experience for our town, our community and our guys are just outstanding. I can't compliment them enough."
"Finding something that they all bond together in. It's a real rewarding situation," said assistant coach Gerry Dill.
Spencer County will now host the first round of the region tournament Sunday against South Oldham.
"The energy feels good. Everybody's loose. I don't think anybody's too uptight about a big game coming up. I mean, it's going to be one of our biggest games we've had all year, and I like that. The guys, they just feel really loose, and I think we're ready to go," said Stewart.
"I keep telling the guys, you just got to keep playing our best baseball right now. And I believe that we are," said Dill.
