In 1977, the Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii erupted. The village of Kalapana was evacuated and countless acres of farmland were destroyed.
One victim of the eruption was Haruo Taira, a mango farmer. After the eruption all but destroyed his farming business, Taira had to change tactics.
Hawaii is known for its orchids. The hot and humid climate is perfect for growing the flowering plant. Taira took a chance with the flower and began his business anew.
In 1982, Taira was interviewed by reporter Michael Kronley about his dedication to growing the iconic Vanda orchid.
