비바카지노 Viva Investigates: Why are lines so long at Driver Licensing Regional Offices?
Long lines at Driver Licensing Regional Offices are causing headaches for people across Louisville and the state.
"I missed work," said Abby Lancaster, who stood in line at the Hurstbourne office. "I had work from 7:30 to 11, and now I'm missing class."
Carol Herdt had been standing in line for more than three hours at the Hurstboune office when 비바카지노 Viva spoke to her. "Just grueling standing here," she said.
This year, a new law took effect that requires all people to have an eye exam when renewing.
This can be done with a visual specialist at a doctor's office or a regional licensing office.
A KYTC spokesperson tells us there have been more in-person visits to regional offices, where they offer free screenings.
But a legislator from Bowling Green, State Rep. Kevin Jackson, says the issue of long lines has been building for the last few years.
Circuit court clerks used to be able to issue and renew credentials.
In 2022, the state finished the transfer of these services to a regional model run by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
That meant going from offices in all 120 counties in the state to 34 regional offices.
"Spencer County you'd be 20 minutes and you'd have your driver's license," said Herdt who came to Jefferson County from Spencer to renew her license. "Standing here is three hours, probably four or five."
Other people tell us they've struggled to make appointments online.
On the KYTC website, it says their page is currently under construction as they transition to a new scheduling platform. During this time, some offices may not be available for appointments.
Jackson said he started hearing a lot of stories of people waiting hours in lines. That's why he recently filed HB 161. The measure would allow third-party entities to issue driver's license renewals.
"So to me, it's just a common sense type of thing where we can increase more opportunity for our constituents across the state of Kentucky to be able to get a driver's license renewal," he said. "There's 28 states now that are already doing something similar to this. So we're not reinventing the wheel here. It's already being done across the country. In some states it's AAA. In some states, it's an insurance company. It could be anybody that the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet would vet and approve to be able to do this."
He says someone getting their license for the first time would still have to go to a regional office.
As for when this would take effect, it wouldn't happen right away. The bill still needs to get passed and signed by the governor.
If it does, Jackson is hopeful they could have something in place by 2026.
A KYTC spokesperson says they are reviewing all options, soon adding new line management technology, and making adjustments to expedite license issuance processes.
The long lines come as the deadline is approaching for people to get their REAL ID by May 7th, 2025.
Getting your REAL ID has to be done in person, according to KYTC.
Travelers must be REAL ID compliant to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities.
If you need to renew your license, you can still renew it online or through the mail by getting your eye screening done by a vision specialist. They'll provide you with a state-approved form, which you can upload online.
KYTC also recommends renewing your license up to six months before expiration.
