What happened during the offseason?
The 2025 season began on Jan. 1 when teams received their salary cap, the maximum allowable team salary. About 30% of the league's players entered free agency the same day, either as an unrestricted or restricted agent.
Unrestricted free agents were allowed to negotiate contracts on Jan. 27 and enter negotiation agreements on Feb. 1.
One of the first reported trades to kick off the busy offseason was a blockbuster three-team deal between the Seattle Storm, Las Vegas Aces and Los Angeles Sparks.
In the deal, the Storm traded their 2015 No. 1 pick, Jewell Loyd, to the Aces. The Aces sent their 2017 No. 1 pick, Kelsey Plum, to the Sparks. In return, the Storm received the No. 2 pick in the 2025 WNBA draft and forward Li Yueru from the Sparks, along with the Aces맥스카지노 first round pick in 2026.
This was the league's first trade that involved multiple No. 1 overall picks.
Loyd and Plum weren't the only former No. 1 picks to leave the franchises that drafted them.
Brittney Griner signed with the Atlanta Dream this season, ending her 11-season tenure with the Phoenix Mercury. Griner was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 WNBA draft.
Some players like Natasha Cloud and Rebecca Allen were traded twice in the offseason. Cloud was first traded from the Mercury to the Connecticut Sun, then to the New York Liberty. Allen followed a similar path, moving from the Mercury to the Sun and landing with the Chicago Sky.
The Golden State Valkyries may be a new franchise, but their roster features plenty of experienced players. During the expansion draft, the Valkyries selected one player from 11 different teams and later added veteran Tiffany Hayes in free agency.
