WEBVTT WITH A CHANCE OF SHOWERS SATURDAY WITH A HIGH OF 73. JENNIFER: MAY IS OLDER AMERICANS MONTH. YOU MAY NOT KNOW BUT PEOPLE 85 AND UP ARE IN THE FASTEST GROWING GROUP IN THE STATE AND BY 2030 THERE WILL BE MORE THAN 72 MILLION IN THE U.S. THAT AGE. WE HAVE A LIVE REPORT WITH TIPS ON CARING FOR OLDER LOVED ONES. GOOD TO BE HERE. JENNIFER: THIS IS SUCH A GOOD TOPIC IT TALK ABOUT BECAUSE IT WILL AFFECT SO MANY. BEGINNING IN 2011 WE BEGAN HAVING BABY BOOMERS TURN 65 IN THE COUNTRY, ABOUT 10,000 EVERY DAY. AND FOR THE NEXT 18 YEARS 1,000 BABY BAMMERS WILL TURN 65 EVERY DAY. JENNIFER: I REMEMBER HEARING A REPORT THAT STARTED WITH THE PROBLEM IS AMERICANS ARE LIVING LONGER. IT IS NOT A PROBLEM BUT . IT IS A HUGE BLESSING. IT IS BETTER THAN THE ALTERNATIVE. IT IS A CHALLENGE AND IT IS ALSO AN OPPORTUNITY. ON THE ONE HAND WE NEED IT FOCUS ON KEEPING OUR ELDERS AS WELL AS THEY CAN BE AND ENGAGED AS THEY CAN BE. BUT WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE WE HAVE THE TYPE OF CARE ACROSS THE CONTINUUM NECESSARY IT DO THIS. THAT MEANS EVERYTHING FROM HOME TO PHYSICAL ACTIVITY TO REHAB, TO HOSPITALS, SKILLED NURSING AND ASSISTED LIVING CENTERS. JENNIFER: LET'S TALK ABOUT CHOOSING A LONG-TERM CARE FACILITY. IT IS SUCH A DAUNTING TASK. THE FIRST THING TO REMEMBER IS THESE FACILITIES HAVE CHANGED TREMENDOUSLY THE LAST 30 YEARS. 3 YEARS AGO IF YOU WALKED -- 30 IF YOU WALKED INTO WHAT WE GREW UP CALLING A NURSING HOME IT WOULD BE 90% WOMEN AND NOW IT IS 62%. SO THE ROLE OF THEM IN MARYLAND AND CROSS THE COUNTRY HAS CHANGED. SO, THE FIRST THING YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT IS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR THE SKILLED NURSING REHAB CENTER FOR REHAB OR LONG-TERM CARE AND IF IT IS LONG-TERM CARE IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE. ASSISTED LIVING A BETTER FIT FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY? WILL CARE AT HOME WITH A LITTLE BIT OF ASSISTANCE BE BETTER. JENNIFER: YOU NEED TO VISIT THEM BEFORE YOU PUT ANYONE IN A FACILITY BUT YOU NEED TO KNOW YOUR INSURANCE SYSTEM AND MEDICARE AND MEDICAID. ABSOLUTELY. MEDICARE COVERS MOST OF THE SHORT-TERM REHAB. THEY DON'T COVER LONG-TERM CARE WHICH MOST OLDER AMERICANS AND FAMILIES DON'T REALIZE UNTIL THEY GET TO THAT CRITICAL MOMENT. MEDICARE DOESN'T REALLY COVER LONG-TERM CARE. THERE IS COVERAGE AROUND THE FRINGE BUT PRIMARILY NOT SO MUCH. SO, THAT IS AN IMPORTANT CONVERSATION. JENNIFER: ANY WEBSITE? AMERICAN HEALTHCARE ASSOCIATION LARGE EGGS INEST -- LARGEST HFAM OUR WEBSITE. WE DO HAVE WITH THE AGING OF BOOMERS TIDAL WAVE WITH MEMORY CARE AND ALZHEIMER'S SIDE IS IMPORTANT. THE NUMBER ONE THING IS VISIT THE SITE. HAVE THAT CONVERSATION WITH YOUR LOVED ONE AND PICK THE MINIMUM SORT OF LEVEL OF CARE THAT WILL BE A MATCH. JENNIFER: THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US. GOOD IMPORTANT INFORMATION. STAY WITH US. THE HUMANE SOCIETY IS NEXT WITH
