1. What is the Norman Conquest? and what is the result?
Toward the close of the Old English period an event occurred that had a greater effect on the English language than any other in its history which was the Norman Conquest. It began on 28 September 1066 with the invasion of England by William, Duke of Normandy who could not speak English but French. He won the Battle of Hastings on 14 October 1066, defeating King Harold II of England. By early 1071, William had secured control of most of England, although rebellions and resistance continued until approximately 1088.
The Norman Conquest was a pivotal event in English history. It largely removed the native ruling class, replacing it with a foreign, French-speaking monarchy. By bringing England under the control of rulers originating in France, the Norman Conquest linked the country more closely with continental Europe. Basically the Norman Conquest changed the whole course of the English language.
One of the most important consequences was the introduction of a new nobility because many of the English higher class had been killed on the field at Hastings. So William`s Norman followers had taken place them. Also, the important positions and the great estates were almost held by Normans or foreign people. Moreover, Norman prelates were gradually introduced into all important positions in the church.
