This study examines the factors that determine attitudse toward Muslim among the French. We
mainly focus on the relationship between the support for the far-right party -- National Front and
attitudes toward Muslim. Utilizing the 2009 Pew Global Attitudes Survey, this study finds that
the French who are young, liberal, well-educated, and rich tend to show positive attitudes toward
Muslim. More importantly, the support for the National Front, even after controlling all other
variables, has a strong influence on the formation of negative attitudes toward Muslims, but the
support for other parties, such as Extreme Gauche, Parti Socialiste and Union pour un Mouvement
Populaire, does not have significant effects. Additionally, we find that the interation between the
importance of religion and religious identity leads individuals to have more negative opinion on
Muslim. These results indicate that the support for the National Front might be linked with the
attempts to isolate the Muslims, thereby leading to the ethnic and religious division in France.
This study provides implications that the role of political parties should be considered more
importantly in the discussion of how to achieve social integration.
