This study is an attempt to analyze the historical meaning of the 5.18 Gwangju Democratization Movement in terms of constitutional evaluation and to derive a method of succeeding it. After the presidential election in 2022, public opinion was formed in Korea to include the spirit of 5.18 in the preamble to the constitution. The study will first look at whether it is worth including the spirit of May 18th in the preamble to the Constitution. Second, if it is possible to include the preamble of the constitution in the spirit of 5.18, we will analyze the discussion on the treatment of national merit. In the study, in detail, the 5.18 was evaluated as an important event in the global democracy movement and a civil resistance in the process of implementing democracy, not as a meaning as a democratization movement in Korea. And as part of an effort to inherit it, academic discussions were conducted on the honorific treatment of men of national merit.
