This paper is to examine ?Yiwangga akki(The Musical Instruments of the Yi RoyalHousehold)?, written by Hitaka Eisuke(Èոߤ¨¤¤¤¹¤±), and published by Yiwangjikaakbu(Royal Conservatory of the Yi Household). There are 56 photographs withcommentaries in this book, including Sukonghou, Sokonghou, Wakonghou(Konghu: a kindof chordohpone), and Unna(a kind of idiophone) that were introduced by Hahm Hwa-jinfrom Beijing in 1937.
?Yiwangga akki? explains the musical instruments in terms of their origins, playingmethods, materials, uses, and sizes, although they are not all described in a balanced way.
What it is mostly focusing is the origins of the instruments. Many of the explanation onthe origins of the instruments agree to those in Joseon¡¯s literature in a great deal whencompared, but it also reveals personal opinions to some degrees. Particularly, the booksupports the theory of the Arabian origin, the theory of the West-Asian origin, and thetheory of the South-Asian origin on explaining a few instruments, which is different fromJoseon¡¯s literature that presents the theory of the Chinese origin.
Only a few instruments are explained of their shapes, playing methods, materials, uses,and sizes in full. 43 kinds of instruments are explained of their shapes, 19 of their playingmethods, 15 of the materials, 27 of their uses, and 15 of their sizes. The commentariesare also very brief.
?Yiwangga akki? is a valuable material for understanding the musical instruments ofJoseon in the late 1930s. Since it was produced for commercial sale, it is considered to have been a popular and an easy-to-get guide book of the musical instruments of Joseon.
However, it might not have been a great help to the Japanese who were new or unfamiliarto those instruments, as it is inclined to the origins of the instruments.
