    Interest in AI-based education has grown significantly, but there is a lack of systematic research on how learners interact with AI systems. Learners with limited AI knowledge and experience may face substantial difficulties in engaging with AI systems. For effective AI-based education, it is essential to analyze the patterns of interaction between learners and AI and to provide personalized learning support. This study aims to categorize the patterns of interaction between learners and AI and to explore the factors that influence these interactions. In this study, 30 undergraduate and graduate students participated in AI-based tasks, which involved drawing a four-panel comic with Tooning and writing an English essay using QuillBot, followed by individual interviews. A qualitative analysis of the interview data revealed three types of interaction: AI-dependent, human-driven, and collaborative interactions. The interaction patterns varied depending on how frequently learners interacted with AI and how much agency they demonstrated in engaging with the task. In addition, the nature of the interactions was influenced by the factors including learner competencies, AI systemsโ€™ function and design, task characteristics, and interaction contexts. Particularly, learners with more knowledge and experience in AI, positive attitudes toward it, task-related knowledge, and self-regulated learning abilities were more likely to interact with AI in a collaborative way. These findings provide key insights for shaping the future direction of education in the AI era and for exploring the design principles underlying teaching with AI systems.
