North Korean immigrants whom I met in New Malden, U.K. during my three terms of fieldwork from 2013 to 2018 tended to express a ¡°sense of well-being¡± in various ways when they talked about their present lives. They are soci-economic minorities in British society and still face various challenges in their daily lives. Still, they tend to evaluate/represent their lives in a very positive way. This article attempts to have a contextual understanding of their ¡®sense of well-being.¡¯ Based on anthropological discussions that we should always understand people¡¯s identities and narratives in a relational context (rather than existential), this article presents the ¡®sense of well-being¡¯ of North Korean immigrants as a situational product of various levels of encounter, that, in turn has its own histories. In other words, it examines their ¡®sense of well-being¡¯ as a cultural construct that is composed and reconstructed through everyday relationships across differences, rather than a set of independent and fundamental feelings.
