Wigwan Yonggi Lee compiled Akboo(in the possession of Korea university) which is devided into two volumes. Akboo is the book that includes more than 1400 songs of Chosun. This songbook was highly regarded from early because of its extensive and unique works.
It took Yonggi Lee(1870-1933) about ten years to completed this book. He was a native of Seoul, lived in poverty, but he joined company with various men of letters. Because he loved a taste for the arts, almost every gisaeng(����) in Seoul knew him. It is known that such his affections for arts and music was able to compile Akboo.
But his life, as a compiler, was not very well-known, compared with all the attention in Akboo. That is why studies of Akboo itself has hardly done yet. For this reason, this article tracked his lifetime down again and found out some important facts. These new information about his lifetime will open up a new chapter of study Yonggi Lee of the early 20 century. Facts are as follows.
First, There are different versions of Akboo, which are the possesions of the Library of Seoul National University, the Library of Dankook University, and the Library of Kyungbook National University. These are all known for their making from 'some original document' of Yiwangjik Aakbu. However, Analysis showed that Yiwangjik Aakbu referred to Yonggi Lee's two volume of Akboo for organizing korean songs. From about 1926 to 1928, Yonggi Lee provided Akboo, as reference books, to Yiwangjik Aakbu. As a result, it created several different versions of Aakbugajiblike today.
Second, Yonggi Lee published Chosunmusangsinsikyorijebub(printed by Yeongchang Publishing Company) in 1924. It is the most substantial book among many cookbooks which were made in the early 20 century. He completed it with his own recipe, referred to Jeongjoji of Imwon-kyungje-ji. And his actual cooking skill was widely well-known to men of letters around him at that time.
Third, Yonggi Lee participated in compiling Joseoneo Sajeon of Gyemyung-gurakbu. Especially, he collected vocabulary like slang, proverb, etc, because he already knew about custom of Seoul residential district very well, and was a natural storyteller.
His new background like these is all about 'Songs of Chosun', 'Cooking of Chosun', and 'Language of Chosun'. It shows that his major achievements in lifetime is connected with 'The Things of Chosun'.
