In this study, we investigated his commentaries on The Complete Enlightenment S��tra, which are considered relatively early works of Tsungmi. Through this work, the question of where does Tsungmi find the contact point between teaching and practice, and what is the method of fusion was examined. The confirmed central contents are as follows.
In the case of Tsungmi, the idea of unity between teaching and practice presented in the Ch'an-y��an-ch��-ch'��an-chi Tu-hs�� has already formed a basic framework in his commentaries of The Complete Enlightenment S��tra. The method and content of the comprehensive interpretation of both is carried out through a new definition of the concept of Ch'an. He also confirms the Buddhist practice theory, especially the historical legitimacy of the Chinese Ch'an sect. Through this, it was to reinterpret all Buddhist practices since Indian Buddhism, based on the conviction of the truthfulness of Shenhui thought.
In this process, for Tsungmi, The Complete Enlightenment S��tra is interpreted as the best medium in which the synthesis of teaching and practice is embodied and, consequently, his conclusion on the relational theory of teaching and practice was the integration of the content of The Complete Enlightenment S��tra with Shenhui's thoughts. Re-discussion is needed on defining Tsungmi's thoughts on the relational theory between teaching and practice as ��Hu�� yu��n-Ch'an��.
