In 1919, John Singer Sargent produced and installed ¡°Synagogue¡± and ¡°Church¡± for the conclusion of ¡°The Triumph of Religion¡±. However, as soon as it was unveiled, ¡°Synagogue¡± faced strong opposition from the Jewish community. The reason why ¡°Synagogue¡± caused a stir was that Judaism was only a process in the development of religion and made it recognized as a failed religion.
Jewish communities in Boston were displeased with the use of symbols by the publicly funded Boston Public Library. Now the debate about ¡°Synagogue¡± was systematically unfolding as a coalition between Jewish communities. Since then, a real attack on ¡°Synagogue¡± has emerged, and the situation has worsened out of control.
The controversy surrounding the ¡°Synagogue¡± quickly became a national task and signaled the growth of multicultural communities in the 20th century. Additionally, the ¡°Synagogue¡± debate raised concerns about the realization of universal publicity, rethinking the concept of publicity and the scope of its application.
This paper aims to examine the development of the ¡°Synagogue debate¡± between Sargent and the Jewish community, and to examine the concept of publicity and the scope of application of publicity that has been a problem in the ¡°Synagogue¡± debate.
