Yi Sung-chun was a composer who created a musical world to essentially cognize a life basedon philosophical thoughts. Yi Sung-chun's musical philosophy centers on Hwaibudon ( ),Gaidocheonhamo ( ), and Seongjijaseoungya ( ) of Confucianism and Taoism.
Hwa ( ) symbolizes a wholeness premised on individual, and Budon ( ) implies individualelements of music. Korean traditional music¡¯s style is based on Hwaibudon idea because someindividuals gathers and harmonizes one another. Gaidocheonhamo means that all entities areborned from Tao ( ) and they grow up through the energy of Tao, and Seongjijaseoungya meansthat any matters and things have their essential character. In other words, all things are acceptedas independent beings in Tao, and at the same time they make a mutual harmony of Hwaibudonin provision of nature.
Musical Poetry Hondon for Wind Instruments, written in 2000, is a representative piece duringthe latter part of Yi Sung-chun¡¯s life. This piece embodies his essential cognition about a life andhis musical philosophy, and it contains his subtle insights about universe and nature. The pieceis composed of four Daegeum, four Haegeum, Buk, Yutgarak, 21-strings Gayageum, and Ajaeng, andexpresses a concept of Chaos. Its whole foam is A-B-C-A' with an short introduction, and has someepisodes, where only percussions and string instruments appears, between A and B, and betweenB and C. Musical Poetry Hondon¡¯s musical structure is elaborately organized in regard to thematicsections, texture, organic structure, tempo, and changes of musical atmosphere, etc. Musical PoetryHondon exquisitely depicts order and chaos, and reflects Yi Sung-chun's Hwaibudon philosophy.
