This article argues that Dasan's reflections on the role of the emotions in literature can contribute in important ways to our understanding of the development of empathy. I focus on Dasan who holding a prime necessity to study literature in order to preserve, protect and complete our human nature, through the writings of A. Smith and M. Nussbaum. Since Confucius, philosophers have felt a tension between being involved in the public domain and being philosophically rigorous. I analyze how empathy can make a difference to the public domain in ways that are both socially responsible and consistent with the norms of philosophical argumentation.????
