The Korean final-ending ¡®-ney š has a core meaing of ¡®mirativity¡¯ and an additional meaning of ¡®firsthand evidentiality¡¯. This paper established the typical and atypical use of the final-ending ¡®-ney š. The two usages differ in speech scenes variables such as assumption of addressor, the path of information acquisition, the depth of thinking, and speech act, etc. The typical usage is to express an attitude of surprise immediately about information obtained through direct perception without considering the addressor. The atypical usage is to assert the information reasoned through deep thought to the addressor. Accordingly, the two usages also differ in syntactic and phonetic realization. In typical usage, ¡®-ney š is realized with LH% and non-understanding exclamation ¡®e¨J¡¯. On the other hand, ¡®-ney š in atypical usage is realized with LHL% and understanding exclamation ¡®a¨K¡¯. Yet, the actual uses of ¡®-ney š occupy various positions in the continuum of typicality.
