Leisure culture in Korean society in the 1970s was a field through which the masses' socio-cultural desires interacted with the state's ruling ideology and the logic of capital accumulation. The state's strategy was to use the thrift and saving ideology and labor-supremacy ideas by making full use of outdoor recreation and sports, which had been widespread since 1966. But mass leisure culture formed beyond the state¡¯s original intention. The masses made the best use of social infrastructure that the state built for industrial development and inducement of foreign tourists. While the upper class formed the style of conspicuous consumption in order to satisfy their material vanity, the middle class, including urban white-collar workers,expressed their desire between the light recharge and the strong deviation-impulse by way of demoralization. This was a result of leisure culture functioning as a mechanism of cultural competition and negotiation among the diverse strata. Through imitation and cultural differentiation in a mass-consumption society, the masses, whilst falling to the temptations of consumption, attempted to define their own desires.
