    The purpose of this study was to investigate romantic relationship satisfaction and self-esteem, develop a teaching plan for desirable romantic relationships, and provide basic data that could help improve self-esteem through romantic relationships, which are critical to positive experiences in interpersonal relationships.; For this purpose, a self-administered survey on romantic relationship satisfaction and self-esteem was conducted in students at universities in rural communities from May to June 2018 and a total of 617 questionnaires were analyzed, with the exception of incomplete ones and those having insincere answers. The questionnaire was composed of the items concerning the general characteristics, romantic relationship satisfaction, and self-esteem. Exploratory factor analysis using a correlation matrix and principal factor analysis was performed to validate the romantic relationship satisfaction and self-esteem scales, and Cronbach¡¯s ¦Á was estimated for reliability of the scales.
    As for romantic relationship satisfaction by the general characteristics, men were generally more dissatisfied than women. Juniors and freshmen were generally more dissatisfied than seniors; juniors were more likely to have communication problems regarding problem-solving(and conflict resolution) than seniors; and juniors and freshmen were more satisfied with romantic relationships in general than seniors. General dissatisfaction, problem-solving communication problems, emotional communication problems, and romantic relationship satisfaction in general differed significantly by romantic relationship status; the respondents were more likely to have experience of having a romantic relationship than to have no such experience; and the students having a romantic relationship for ¡Ý1 year were generally more satisfied with the relationships than those having it for 6 months to <1 year. As for the differences in self-esteem by the general characteristics, men showed higher levels of self-esteem at school, at home, as a whole, and in general than women. Juniors showed higher levels of self-esteem at school than sophomores; juniors and freshmen showed higher levels of self-esteem at home than seniors; freshmen showed higher levels of self-esteem as a whole than sophomores and seniors; and sophomores showed higher levels of self-esteem in general than juniors. Science and engineering, medicine, and health majors showed higher levels of self-esteem at school than education and humanities majors; science and engineering, medicine, and health majors showed higher levels of self-esteem at home than education and humanities majors; science and engineering, medicine, and health majors showed higher levels of self-esteem as a whole than teaching majors; science and engineering, medicine, and health majors showed higher levels of academic self-esteem than education and humanities majors; and science and engineering, medicine, and health majors showed higher levels of self-esteem in general than humanities and education majors. The students having a romantic relationship for ¡Ý1 year showed higher levels of self-esteem in general than those having it for 6 months to <1 year; the students having had 3 to <6 romantic relationships showed higher levels of school-based and academic self-esteem than those having had ¡Ý6 romantic relationships.
    On the basis of these results, a romantic relationship can become a factor that can improve sociability and self-esteem; therefore, it is necessary to make systematic and wise plans for helping them have positive self-esteem through desirable romantic relationship guidance.
