This article studies literary issues regarding the ethnic imagination and identity problems within native Taiwanese poetry. Modern Taiwanese society has been revealing its inherent political, economic, and cultural diversities in various types of phenomena and conflicts. Basically, the society is going through strict confrontations between the opposite political opinions supporting independence from the Continent and calling for unification. Besides, it also shows both conflicts and reconciliation of various cultures due to its complicated ethnic backgrounds.
In this article, I study the most acclaimed native Taiwanese poets, Monaneng and Walisi Nuogan, Dongshuming, and their poems. Through this research, I could identify the ethnic identities of native Taiwanese and their diverse poetic consciousnesses of the challenges facing them. They were aware of their identity as 'aborigines' within the society, and thus focused on expressing the ethnic conflicts they face in their daily lives.
Through the investigation on their literary achievements, I were able to recognize the new flow of Taiwanese literature since 1980's, in addition to their characteristics, meanings, and status in modern Taiwanese literature.
