This research is aimed at considering what influence Han Yong-Woon got from Tagore in aesthetical/ideological aspects and what similarity/dissimilarity exists between Manhae¡¯s and Tagore¡¯s ¡®Beloved¡¯ or ¡®Lord.¡¯ Through comparative research on Tagore¡¯s and Han Yong-Woon¡¯s poems similarity and dissimilarity between them are traced. Han Yong-Woon influenced by and accepted poetic style and thought of Tagore, who was introduced in Korea as the world-famous poet who won the Nobel Prize for Literature and also was a thinker of a country under colonial rule as a person from the Buddhist country India. The basis of Tagore¡¯s thought is Upanishad, the fundamental idea of which is that Brahman and Atman get into oneness transcendent from this world (samsara). Thus, the ¡®Nim¡¯ expressed in Tagore¡¯s poems is Brahman, the absolute being as the basis of life and also the object of love and bliss. Tagore¡¯s and Han Yong-Woon¡¯s poems show some similarities in which both explore the essence of ¡°Love¡± and ¡°Existence¡± and show the shared interest in the basis of human life and happiness. But Han Yong-Woon also shows some dissimilarities in the perceptions of colonial reality and its counteracting method. Han Yong-Woon criticized Tagore¡¯s attitude of not directly participating the colonial reality and disapproved his praising the death as the symbol of transcending this world and unifying Brahman and Atman. The dissimilarities come from the differences between their perception of colonial reality and the ideological differences between Tagore¡¯s Hinduism and Han Yong-Woon¡¯s Zen Buddhism.
