Hwaunsa Temple in Yongin inherited an old temple originated from the Goryeo Dynasty, and was re-established in 1938 by grhapati Cha Jae-yoon and donated to Monk Woljodang Jimyong. Since 1962, it has been operated as a Buddhist school and monastery, and it is said that the two wooden Buddha statues of Amitabha and Bhaisajyaguru, which are currently each enshrined in Daeungjeon Hall and Zen Hall, have been shifted from Geumsansa Temple in Gimje.
Meanwhile, when gold plating was newly conducted in 2002, the inside of the Buddha statues were investigated, and through this, one document presumed to be a production record and a list of participants were confirmed along with scriptures such as Lotus Sutra and Avatamska Sutra. The production record is a one-piece woodblock print with the title of Introduction of Lotus Sutra, which is important because the transcript list of participants is attached at the end. At the beginning of this transcribed list, it is recorded as the first year of Sungjeong(1628), so it is presumed that the Buddha statue was also made during this period.
This time, I reviewed the literature from the Buddha statues of Hwaunsa Temple in more detail. Unfortunately, there was no clear clue that the two Buddha statues were transported from Geumsansa Temple. However, as Lotus Sutrawhich were printed by woodblocks made at Silsangsa Temple in Buan and Ssanggyesa Temple in Eunjin (Nonsan) were found, the possibility that the two wooden Buddha statues were moved from Geumsansa Temple in Gimje increased.
Documents are mainly composed of parts of the Lotus Sutra and Avatamska Sutra. In the case of Lotus Sutra, three types were found: a reprinted woodblock version based on the metal type print in the period of King Sejong, a woodblock print by the transcript writing of Seong, dalsaeng(³Éß_Éú, 1376~1444), and a woodblock print of Yongjangsa-temple. Avatamska Sutra is mostly printed with a later version of The Guide of Avatamska Sutra brought by monk Uicheon(ÁxÌì, 1032~1083) during the Goryeo Dynasty.
These records were published relatively often during the Joseon Dynasty, so they are not rare cases. However, Hwaunsa documents were not printed for binding as books, but were repeatedly printed some pages for the purpose of putting them inside the Buddha statue, and contain composition records that can be assumed to have been printed in 1628, which can be evaluated as valuable documents.
