1923년 하왿�이한인학생방문단의인천 방문 주요 내용과 의의 (The 1923 Korean Hawaiian Student Visitors to Incheon: Key Activities and Implications)

본 연구는 1923년 하왿�이학생방문단의 약 2달간의 고국 방문 중 인천 방문을 고찰하였다. 하왿�이학생방문단은 이승만의 정치적 입지를 강화하기 위해 이승만이 세운 교육기관, 한인기독학원 건축비 기금모금을 목적으로 결성되었다. 하왿�이학생방문단 일정 중 인천 방문에 관한 기록은 미주 한인 이민사 시작의 거점지로서 인천이 지니는 위상과 중요성을 고려할 때에 주목할 만하다. 비록 1박이라는 짧은 기간이지만 지방 순회 중 인천에서의 일정은 다른 도시에 비교할 때 자세히 기록되어 있다. 이에 본 연구는 1923년 하왿�이학생방문단의 인천 방문 내용을 신문기사를 중심으로 분석하여 인천 주민의 하왿�이 거주 동포를 향한 인식과 그 의의를 살펴보고자 한다.
그 결과 하왿�이학생방문단 환영일정이 한인 미주이민 시작점에 거점 도시라고 할 수 있는 인천 주민으로서의 자긍심을 드러내고 있었음을 확인하였다. 환영위원회의 회의 결과로 이루어진 하왿�이학생방문단 인천 내 일정은 같은 핏줄을 지닌 동포로서의 동질감뿐만 아니라 첫 이민단을 보냈던 지역주민으로서의 큰 의미를 부여하고 있었다. 이는 이민 역사왿� 밀접한 관련이 있는 내리교회 관련 단체왿� 인물을 중심으로 한 환영일정에 반영되어 있다. 내리교회 교육사업의 결과물인 영화학껓 학생들의 환영식, 내리교회 방문, 내리교회 목사의 환영 연설, 내리 교회 청년회를 중심으로 새롭게 조직한 상우 야구단, 내리교회 교인이 중심이 된 아마추어 전통문화 단체인 이우구락부의 연주 등이 그 예이다.
20세기 초 미주 한인들의 인천 방문을 언급한 기존 연구는 있었으나 하왿�이학생방문단의 구체적 일정과 그 의의를 밝힌 연구는 미흡했다. 미주 이민사 시발점으로서의 자부심을 드러내고 있는 인천인들의 1923년 하왿�이학생방문단 환영 내용을 밝힌 본 연구는 인천과 하왿�이 지역을 교차하며 한인 이민 문화사 이해에 지평을 넓혀 주었다는 데에 의의가 있다.

This study examines the Korean Hawaiian students’ visit to Incheon in 1923. The Korean Hawaiian students visited in Korea for about two months to raise money for the establishment of the Korean Christian School. Newspaper articles describe the students’ visit in Incheon, among many areas, in more detail; also their activities in Incheon were slightly different from those in other areas. This article grasps the reason by analyzing key activities of the students in Incheon on July 13 and 14, 1923.
On analysis of the newspaper articles, this study argues that Incheon people showed their pride as the locals that had marked an important first step in the Korean immigration to the United States. The students’ schedule in Incheon, resulting from the Welcoming Committee's decision, not only reflects Incheon people's sense of kinship with the young compatriots but also deeper meanings to the event as the locals sending the first groups of Korean immigrants to Hawai‘i. The participation of organizations and people affiliated with the Naeri Church─a key site for the first Korean immigration to the United States─in the welcoming events demonstrates this. Examples include the speech of the church pastor at the welcoming party; the Sang-u Baseball Players; and the Korean traditional music performance by Iugurakbu.
A few previous studies have addressed Korean American's visit to Incheon; however, no studies have discussed specific activities of the 1923 Korean Hawaiian student visitors and their significance. The findings of Incheon residents’ pride as those who live in the starting point of the Korean immigration to the United States expand our understanding of the history of Korean diasporic culture intersecting Hawai'i and Incheon.
