In this article I tried to explain the structure and characteristics of the Yeoljo-Tongki, the history of Joseon Dynasty being compiled by Ahn Jung-Bok(Soonam). Soonam imitated the Veritable Records in compiling articles of the Tongki. The categories of the Tongki is similar to those of the Veritable Records. Between the Veritable Records and the Tongki, there was another history called the Kukjo-Pokam, the Great Mirror of Our Dynasty, which was compiled to refer to kingship in the government. So the categories and forms of the articles such as comment, diplomat, literati exam., opinions of subjects, etc., of the Tongki look like the Kukjo-Pokam.
In order to examine the characteristics of the Tongki, I chose two sample period of King Kwang-Hea and King Hyeon-Jong. First, the criminal case of the prince Imhea, the distortion of Joseon-China relationship and the failure of Tax reform of the Early Kwang-Hea reign in the Tongki were coincided with the records of the Diary of King Kwang-Hea. After the third year of Kwang-Hea, the Tongki dealed with arbitrariness of Yi I-Chum and Jung In-Hing, the excessive waste of finance in the palace constructions, the opportunism in foreign policies criticizing the Dae-Buk regime.
The articles of the King Hyeon-Jong of the Tongki were also similar to the Veritable Records and Soonam supported the Nan-In Party who insisted the Three-year Mourning at the funeral of King Hyo-Jong. But by recording the Tax reform of Suh-In Party ect., the Tongki was more fair than the Veritable Records.
I emphasized the characteristics of the diary-form record as the primitive memories[the memories for preservation] by contrasting the cultural and collective memories that preserve particular records and remind them of their social identity.[the memories for function] In this respect the collective memories may be apt to be a closed history and the memories for preservation may complement the memories for function by providing various records from time to time. I think Soonam, as a historian, wanted to transfer the memories for preservation to sublate the risk of the memories for function.
