?? ??? ???? ???? �D ��????��? ???? (New Woman and Love Discourse in the Ladies�� Journal of Modern China)

This study aims at examining the discourses on new woman and love, two most important cultural apparatus constituting a modern subject of 1920s, 30s China through the Ladies' Journal.
At the first period(1915~1919), the initiatory figure of new woman, the girl student is prohibited to marry freely on her own will. At next stage(1920~1925), the May Fourth New Cultural Movement transforms love into a modern individual's characteristics, adding to it an anti-feudal, social meaning. Women and men shows different view on modern love, due to that a male subject interpellates a new woman as the only object of love, while otherizing old wives, illiterate women from lower classes. Finally, facing the Japanese invasion, national salvation movement asks a new woman for patriotism instead of love, and becoming a good mother and wise wife again. However politically different, KMT and CCP are same in underestimating love as personal feeling.
Overall, new woman and love discourses are defined in terms of prohibition, encouragement, and again prohibition due to the modern Chinese male intellectuals' political, ideological situation and gender advantage. However, some new women differently interpret love, divorce, or views on new and old woman and thereby prove budding gender consciousness.
