Until now, research on `Mandang'(�d�h), a secret anti-Japanese organization in the Buddhist community during the Japanese colonial period of Korea, has mainly focused on its formation and the Independence Movement. In this study I would like to approach its educational and academic activities and their transmission. Especially, I would like to examine the nationalistic succession of Hyodang Choi Beom-sul(1904~1979) focusing on his Buddhist activities and the transmission of Korean tea culture.
In other words, the purpose of this study is to show how Hyodang Choi Beom-sul, a transitional figure who experienced colonization as a member of Mandang, conducted internal and external activities with a consistent national spirit amid the change of the social system from traditional to modern times, and that the direction of all his activities resulted in `national studies'. I wish to argue that `national studies' here means not just what comes after tradition, but the rediscovery of the modern national self. This is a search for an answer to the question of how the modern awareness of the studies on Joseon at that time and how its transmission has been passed down to modern national studies through the activities of Hyodang, a Buddhist practitioner and intellectual, under the harsh conditions of colonialism.
The foundations of Hyodang's national studies are largely the identity of national Buddhism and social sense, the role of Wonhyo's teaching as a national study, and the Korean way of tea, which is the definition of the Korean way of life.
In this thesis, it is argued that the activities of Hyodang, a practical intellectual in the modern Buddhist world, through his life and the nature of his research, results in national studies. Therefore, the significance of this thesis is to demonstrate that Hyodang's study of Buddhism and the Korean Way of Tea as well his as political and social activities, including the independence movement, was socialized and nationalized based on an existential perspective. The completion of the restoration of Wonhyo studies, which Hyodang failed to achieve and the in-depth study of that is a task left to his descendants.
