북한 문학비평논쟁의 리얼리즘과 당(黨)적 원칙의 길항 (The antagonism of realism and party-style literary principles in the North Korean Literary Criticism Debate)

이 글은 북한 소설 「개나리」에 대한 비평 논쟁(1960)에 나타난 리얼리즘과 당(黨)문학 원칙의 길항을 분석한다. 이는 남북 통합 ‘코리아 문학사’ 서술을 위한 북한 문학비평사 연구의 일환이다. 북한의 공식 입장인 ‘주체문학으로의 일방적 도정’이라는 유일담론과 차별화된, 주체사상 이전의 사회주의 리얼리즘 비평사(1945~67)를 실체적 재구성의 한 부분이다. 구체적으로는 변희근의 단편소설 「개나리」(1960.5)를 둘러싼 『��학신문㿒�의 '지상토론'란(1960.7)의 논쟁을 발굴, 분석하였다. 6.25전쟁 때 아들을 잃은 어머니의 심리적 상처를 사실적으로 그린 이 작품을 두고 평론가, 독자들의 비판이 쏟아져 나왔다. 10년 전 죽은 아들에 대한 비애 때문에 주변사람들을 힘들게 하고 복구 건설의 상징인 새 아파트로 이사도 안 하는 주인공 삼녀의 형상이, 적(원쑤)에 대한 적개심을 사회주의 건설의 동력으로 전환해야 하는 천리마운동의 시대정신에 어긋난다는 비판이다. 『��학신문㿒� 편집자는 비평과 독자투고를 정리하여 이 작품이 비전형적 상황과 인물을 왜곡해서 묘사하고 당 정책을 따르지 않아 ‘사회주의적 사실주의’ 창작방법과 거리가 멀다고 결론지었다. 당 문예정책에 충실한 「빛나는 전망」으로 유명해진 변희근이 시범 케이스로 공개 비판을 받은 것이 바로 「개나리」 논쟁이다. 이는 ‘도식주의 비판’ 논쟁(1956~60)의 좌편향적 대미를 장식했다는 비평사적 의미가 있다. 하지만 남한 연구자의 현미경적 시선으로 논쟁을 복원하고 작품의 가치를 천착하면, 북한에서는 보기 드물게 전쟁의 상처가 섬세하게 잘 드러난 전후문학 문제작으로 재평가될 수 있다. 이렇게 보는 근거가 바로 '한국문학, 북한문학, 조선문학'의 기존 패러다임을 개념사적으로 넘어선 '코리아 문학사'의 시각이며, 동시에 묻혀버린 자료를 발굴해서 의미화를 실천한 매체론적 접근법 덕분이다.

This article analyzes the antagonism of realism and party literary principles in the 1960 North Korean literary criticism debate. This is part of a study on the history of literary criticism in North Korea (1945~2020). It attempts to substantively reconstruct the history of criticism of socialist realism (1945~67) differentiated from the unique theory of “one-sided road to Juche literature”, which is the official position of North Korea. Specifically, I analyzed the debate in the 'Paper discussion' section of Literature Newspaper surrounding Hee-geun Byun's short novel "Forsythia[개나리]" (1960). Many criticisms have been raised for this work, which realistically depicts the psychological wounds of a mother who missed her son who died for 10 years during the Korean War. Heroine makes the characters uncomfortable because of the longing and sadness for her deceased son and does not even move to a new apartment. This is contrary to the spirit of the Chollima Movement[천리마운동], which must turn the hostility caused by war into a driving force for socialist construction. The editors of Literature Newspaper summarized the criticisms of critics and readers as follows: This work depicts unusual situations and characters, and does not follow Party policy, which is far from the socialist realistic creative method.
Hee-geun Byun, who became famous for his “shining outlook,” faithful to the usual party literary policy, was publicly criticized as a pilot case for the “Forsythia” debate. This has a critical and historical significance as the left-biased controversy of the 'criticism of schematism' debate(1956~60). However, from the perspective of a South Korean researcher, if the controversy is restored and the value of the work is explored, it can be reevaluated as a post-war literature problem that reveals the wounds of war, which is rare in North Korea. The reason for this view is the view of 'One Korea Literature', which goes beyond the existing paradigm of 'South Korean Literature, North Korean Literature' in a conceptual historical approach. At the same time, it can be said that it is thanks to a media-based approach that uncovered microfilm materials that have disappeared from the South and North Korea and implemented meaning.
