The purpose of this study is to compare the Silla calligraphy to that of the Northern Wei, Sui, and Tang and to identify the characteristics of Silla calligraphy. The Silla calligraphy shows the change from the round kiashu (regular script) with the taste of lishu(official script) to the elongated angular kiashu. This change is profoundly related to the calligraphy of the Northern Wei, Sui, and Tang. The calligraphy of the early Silla is similar to the flowing round style spread among the royal family and aristocracy of the Northern Wei, and that of the late Silla resembles to the arranged powerful style of the Sui and Tang. It is the result of interactions with China of the time. The Silla dynasty learned many systems in politics, economy, culture and so on from the Northern Wei through two interactions in the early sixth century. It also imported Sui and Tang calligraphy in the middle of the seventh century through the interactions of royal family, students, and monks who had studied in China.
Despite the Chinese influence, the calligraphy of Silla demonstrates the characteristics of the own style of Silla. It can be said that during the sixth century the naturalness of Silla calligraphy, with the taste of kiashu of the Northern Wei, is the characteristic of its own, because the naturalness is also seen in some writings of the United Silla period. The calligraphy of Silla in the middle of the seventh century shows a high sense of beauty of the Silla people, because it combined some elements of the northern part with those of the southern part in China. The difference is therefore said to be the identity of Silla calligraphy.
