The purpose of this thesis is to find the original names of the words ¡®???¡¯(squirrel), ¡®???¡¯(mole), and ¡®???¡¯(squirrel with blue hairs). There is a common thing among these three animals that they are related with ¡®?¡¯(rats), even though all of them are not for ¡®??¡¯(animal of the rat genus). The ¡®???¡¯ was ¡®ûÝþ°?¡¯ in the 18th century documents, the ¡®???¡¯ was ¡®???¡¯ in the 15th century documents, and the ¡®???¡¯ was ¡®ìiÊó'(blue rat) in the 15th century documents. The native Korean name for ¡®???¡¯ could not be found in any literature.
For the ¡®ûÝþ°?¡¯ and the ¡®???,¡¯ the way of tracing each word's appearing time, coinage structure, and process of change all together was used to see whether the existing studies are good for finding the original names. And some other words which represent the ¡®???¡¯ and the ¡®???¡¯ were discussed. The word form ¡®ûÝþ°?,' which followed ¡®ûÝ??,¡¯ appeared first in the Modern Korean literature. The word ¡®ûÝþ°?' is combined with ¡®ûÝþ°(ûá-+-?)¡¯ and ¡®?.¡¯ The word ¡®??¡¯ was discussed because of its possible representing ¡®???.¡¯ The ¡®??¡¯ is the native name for ¡®ËÉÊó¡¯(pine tree rat) in Chinese letter.
The word ¡®???¡¯ comes from combining ¡®??-¡¯, a verb root with ¡®?¡¯(rat), a noun, and then it changed into ¡®???¡¯ because of its palatalization, and it disappeared. The ¡®???¡¯ beame ¡®???¡¯ because of its own lexical change. It was possible to find a new word ¡®???¡¯ meaning ¡®???,¡¯ and it is a noun form coming from the verb ¡®???-¡¯.
The ¡®???¡¯ was discussed with regarding to its appearing time, word form structure, and the process of word form and meaning changes. In addition, the native noun representing ¡®???¡¯ was traced. The ¡®???¡¯ appeared first time in the 19th century literature and it seems to add ¡®?¡¯ to ¡®???(ìiÊóë)(blue hair of rat)¡¯ in Chinese letter, and it represents ¡®???? ?¡¯(hair of red squirrel) originally. And then it became to refer to ¡®???¡¯, the animal. The meaning change occurred before the 19th century. And ¡®ìiÊó¡¯(blue rat) in Chinese letter was named based on the blue grey color of ¡®???¡¯, the animal. Although there could not be found any native names for ¡®???¡¯, the word ¡®??¡¯, which represent ¡®???¡¯, could sometimes be used for ¡®???¡¯. Or the word ¡®??¡¯ refers to ¡®???¡¯ and ¡®???¡¯ which usually live in pine trees.
