This paper aims to analyze the home-making narratives of two Korean Muslim women from the perspective of rite of passage, and to explore how these two women envisage the image of happy family in different ways according to their respective life course. One of them is Aliyah who married a Muslim American after converting to Islam, and the other is Kim Ok Hwa who converted to Islam after marrying a Muslim Pakistan. Their families are not represented by the so-called ¡®normal family¡¯ frame of the nation-state because these two women chose a Muslim spouse and a Muslim religion in Korea. Nevertheless, they have tried to secure the family life that they wanted to build though undergoing conflicts with and sometimes compromising with adverse actualities. Paying attention to this context, first of all, we attempt to analyze the important differences existing between the characteristics of the liminal phases molded by the detachment from the former phase of their lives by regarding their home-making narratives as the form of rite of passage. Secondly, we sort out the different forms of ¡®the making of home¡¯, ¡®the education of children¡¯, and ¡®the way of residence¡¯ from their narratives. Our reformulation of their narratives as rite of passage is finally expected to reveal how two Korean Muslim women are realizing their dream of happy family outside the ¡®normal family¡¯ frame of the nation-state mired in assimilation ideology.
