A Study of English Learning Motivation (Integrative vs. Instrumental) among Christian college students

The aim of this study is to examine foreign language learners’ learning motivation in English classes. The focus is on the integrative and instrumental motivation toward Christian college students. In the study, 71 undergraduate students studying four classes of English participated in completing a questionnaire reflecting their motivation for learning English.
To determine the students’ tendency towards the two kinds of motivation, a modified survey of 20 items was administered to undergraduate students in a Christian college located near Seoul. The results showed that Christian college students had very high motivation and positive attitudes towards learning English. And they tended to have more instrumental motivation in relation to the items of mission. The findings implied that English should be focused on teaching for overseas mission to meet students’ need.
Furthermore, more research on the relationship between English and overseas mission should be investigated for the future study.
