In the Japanese colonial period, Union Christian College in Korea was known for implementing humanities-centered education based on an incorrect understanding of the liberal arts colleges in the U.S.. This was a sharp contrast to its rival missionary college, Chosun Christian College, which emphasized on education in natural sciences. However, the understanding of that Union Christian College did not pay attention to natural sciences education is quite contradictory to the facts. Rather, the College made efforts to carry out education that balanced both humanities and natural sciences (the college of liberal arts and sciences type) and even opened the department of sciences and then the department of agriculture as part of the major fields of study. Union Christian College persevered to increase faculty members with not only foreign missionaries but also Korean scientists and succeeded to hire a substantial number of excellent scientists. Among Union Christian College graduates, there was quite a number of cases in which they became professional scientists by studying abroad in a U.S. or Japanese universities to pursue further studies. Union Christian College graduates reached approximately ten percent of the Korean graduates of the colleges of science and engineering and of agriculture during the Japanese colonial period. To that extent, Union Christian College occupied a significant position in the Korean history of science and technology that should be evaluated anew.
