    This paper introduces a case study of developing an estimation model of communicative competence, especially, on the basis of the subjects¡¯ self-appraisals. This study claims that the subjects¡¯ self-appraisals must accompany an exact estimation of their communicative competence and the estimation model requires continuous emendations accordingly. Previous estimation models were mostly based on appraisals only by others and, in this way, communicative competence has been understood as a cognitive process and thereby quantified by objective criteria. It is, however, obvious that communicative competence includes not only cognitive, but also non-cognitive elements; therefore, the estimation of communicative competence should include self-appraisals, through which such non-cognitive elements can be measured. Although we might accept many advantages from other models, communicative competence that essentially comprises cognitive and non-cognitive (e.g. affective) elements should well be estimated on the basis of double appraisals by others and by the subjects themselves. Moreover, an exact estimation should be flexible to the changing environments of communication and therefore, for this, continuous emendations on the model are needed.
